I don’t have a problem drafting 2 QBs. It’s the most valuable position, and the hardest to scout, so two bites at the apple can be good idea. It’s not about getting value from both, it’s about getting two shots. As much as I think Sanders was wildly overrated, he’s better than Gabriel.
The Bears just traded back again and added a 2026 4th rounder which I love. I was about to say that this was the time to finally grab a RB, DJ Giddens or Damien Martinez would have been interesting options. We’ll see if either guy lasts to our next pick at 169.
Everyone saw a trade of some kind coming. They had 5 QBs after drafting Milroe, and Howell is a serviceable backup. They will probably just cut their other QB Jaren Hall, who’s more of a practice squad guy.
But this means that Seattle and Minnesota basically swapped QBs named Sam.
As an aside, I’ve been really critical of Poles compulsive need to trade up to target guys in drafts. He’s done a complete 180 in this draft and I couldn’t be happier about it. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if you can’t find good players, but every lottery ticket helps.
Bears back on the clock…fuck it, take Will Howard!
Nope, grabbed a Zah Frazier, CB, UTSA. Another RAS Monster, Poles type, but we’ll see if he can play. Not a lot of 6’3" cornerbacks out there, wonder if they’d consider bulking him up a little and having him play Safety.
Seattle has not picked another guard. They grabbed a DT for another defensive tool and a pretty decent WR (for the 5th round at least, a potential 3rd string receiver that they could use). Then a fullback! They want to run more so that’s not a bad idea.
He’s not the worst QB prospect but there’s a reason he fell so far. If nothing else I’m sure they’re not going to be a week 1 powerhouse.
Unless he proves he can play chess against NFL defenses, he might not have enough in the tool box to become more than an average backup.
Seattle finally grabs a second guard in the 6th round. A guy projected to go in the 6th round, so no big victory, but a reasonable choice. His talent is more at the backup level so he’s more likely to be a depth guy but that’s not a bad thing.
And this article suggests that Pittsburgh is almost certainly getting Aaron Rodgers, which I guess makes sense given what they have.
Omar Khan said the Steelers would be adding two quarterbacks before training camp. With it looking like Aaron Rodgers is on the way, Howard rounds out the quarterback group that we can assume will look as follows:
Aaron Rodgers
Mason Rudolph
Will Howard
Skylar Thompson
Have fun Steeler fans. If nothing else, it might be entertaining to see Tomlin trying to manage Rodgers.
Yeah, Howard is a guy that looks like he has all the physical tools, but he just needs to prove he can actually run an NFL offense and read an NFL defense. Going to require a lot of coaching, but the Buckeyes don’t really run a NFL scheme. CJ Stroud had some of the same critiques as a prospect.
The Bears pass on RB again and try to further shore up the OL by picking an OG out of Michigan State. The draft profile on him is pretty discouraging, but Poles keeps with his form and picks another high RAS guy who may not know how to play. Let’s hope Johnson’s staff can get something out of these athletes.
Damien Martinez to the Seahawks. I think he’s a pretty interesting guy with upside. Probably not a 3-down back.
I have no idea where the Bears go with their final pick. Definitely looking for special teamers or depth pieces in the 7th. We have Burden and Duvernay who can both probably handle return duties. We could use an upgrade at PK, but I’m not sure about any of these prospects there. None of the remaining RBs are interesting at all, but we will need a couple more warm bodies. We’ve added 2 OLs and a DT, so feels like we might be done with the trenches. To make a guess, it’ll be a Safety.
And there’s the pick. It’s actually a RB!
Kyle Monongai from Rutgers. He’s a short, compact guy in the shape of Jeanty. Not a great RAS guy and seems to more of a tough than elusive runner. But I guess we need to hope he pans out like that other 7th rounder from Rutgers.
Edit: Just saw a quote on Newman, our 6th round pick. Apparently he played Center at the East-West Shrine game which is something that intrigued the Bears coaches. We definitely need some insurance behind Dalman and that might mitigate some of the questions about Newman’s ability to play OG. Maybe he can grow into a full time Center by the time Dalman’s deal is over.
From Beast:
Overall, Monangai lacks breakaway speed, but he can pick, slide and weave through the defense with shifty quickness and run toughness. His competitive profile and promising reps on passing downs should make him an effective utility back in the NFL.
GRADE: 4th-5th round
I’ve been at least moderately impressed with the Indianapolis draft. We got the TE we desperately needed in Tyler Warren. We added in the edge rush and secondary, even drafted a couple of warm bodies for RB and QB. I don’t think either of those two will be superstars, but I’m okay with them becoming fairly solid role players, or at least competent backups.
I’m amazed Isaiah Bond remains undrafted. He probably will get picked before we wrap up, but he’d be an amazing get as a UDFA for the Bears. We could use a guy with that kind of speed.
That’s wild. I haven’t kept up with football like I used to and I’m traveling so you could’ve told me the browns took Sanders in the 5th and I’d say oh, they traded down 3 spots and took him 5th overall?
I don’t have the most sympathy for Sanders but I think that’s messed up and not funny. You don’t do that to any kid waiting for one of the most important phone calls of his life.
