This year’s NFL Draft will be held next weekend (the 26th and 27th) in Manhattan. Tickets are free and available on a first-come-first-serve basis Saturday morning.
I was thinking of going this year, for the first time, and I wanted to know if anyone around here had ever been to one. If so, What’s it like? Is it irrespressibly drab and awful, or does it actually hold your attention? How early do you realistically have to show up to make sure you get tickets? Any suggestions in general?
Of course, as long as we have a draft thread going, feel free to chime in about your team’s prospects, or anything else.
The best case scenario for my Giants, in my opinion, is if Chris Simms somehow falls to them in the 2nd Round (but I’m probably just being sentimental).
Simms doesn’t fall past the Bears in round two, unless they take Leftwich or Palmer in round one, which looks unlikely, but hope is really all there is on draft day.
You know all those AssHat overweight fans who sit in the parking lot at the stadium getting hammered 3 hours before kickoff and then spend the entire game buying beer every chance they get and screaming obscenities at the opposing team?
That’s who will be there.
If you’ve watched even part of it on Tv you know how boring it is to watch teams dick around for 15 minutes when everyone on the planet knows who they are going to pick. At least on Tv you can change the freaking channel or listen to Mel Kiper Jr. make yet another wrong prediction.
It is 25 times as boring if you are actually there in person. I cannot think of a bigger, colossal and utterly pointless waste of time.
Don’t go!!!
Just to show you how ridiculous and pathetic the fans who go to this are, a few years ago, the Jets selected someone, I don’t recall who with their first round pick and at least 5 fat guys in Jets uniforms broke down and started sobbing. WTF???
It would be neat to experience the first round, but once you inch past the third I fear it may be gawdawful boring to be stuck there. It would be neat to see Palmer, Jamie Kennedy et al. in the draft room & cheer and watch the last unpicked guys sweat …
My 'skins ran w. the idea that what they could sign beat what they could draft — I hope Coles was worth it, but I do agree he’ll be better over the next 4 years than Rogers or Johnson. I hope.
I agree. I actually LOVE watching the draft on TV. But then, I have a computer, a kitchen stocked with snackies, and a plethora of announcers and background stories to watch. Plus ESPN does a great job.
I can’t imagine anything being more tedious in person. Sittin’ on your thumbs so that every fifteen minutes, you get to hear the commissioner say, “With the nth pick fo the NFL Draft, Your Favorite Team selects… somebody you never would have guessed because all NFL teams do is LIE LIE LIE the week before the draft.” Of course after the first round its every 10 minutes, so things pickup a bit.
McGahee, I don’t suspect will fall past the Eagles in the first round. The Eagles are a bit of an enigma because they don’t REALLY need anybody, so they can take some time and cultivate a player like McGahee. And like you said, if he’s really a future Pro Bowler- he’s totally worth it.
The Saints have two picks fer cryin’ out loud. Where they’re at I imagine they’ll be able to nab Woolfolk/Doss or Polamalu if they want him. 2 of those 3 will likely be available and will be good value picks for their spot. (Honestly, I did a mock and have them taking Doss S and Harris OT, for what its worth. Likely nothing. )
I totally remember this happening. I think it was 2000 when the Jets had 2 picks and the fans ALL wanted them to take CB’s. And the Jets took Shaun Ellis DE and John Abraham LB. The Jets fans were pretty dang mad. (I didn’t remember that off the top of my head, by the way. http://www.nflreport.com/Draft_History_2000.htm
I remember the Jets had two picks in a row that year, which is why I’m sure this was the year.)
Anyway, if you can’t tell by now, I’m a total draft junkie. This year seems pretty hard to peg. There aren’t any “Can’t Miss” prospects really. Even the ones that were looking like it are starting to show some fleas. This is the first year I’m not even sure what my boys (<singing> San Diego… super Chargers… San Diego… CHARGERS CHARGE!) will be doing or what they should be doing. I’m hoping Trufant or Kevin Williams falls to them, but it probably won’t happen. Which means we’ll either have to settle for a DT or DB that should be picked lower, or take an OL which would be good value, but not really needed on the team.
I love the draft.
BTW, this should make my warning of note going to the draft all that much more dire. Stay away from the draft. At least, if you do. Bring a good book and a pillow.
Overall a pretty weak class this year. And, GOD, I hope the Steelers do not wind up taking Mike Doss in round one like so many people seem to think they will. We don’t need a run support safety, we need someone with some damn coverage skills!
The Steelers this year are also in kind of a weird place. Logic dictates that they need help at safety-- but – The way thigns are looking by the time their pick rolls around all the top=-notch DBs will be gone. If Julian Battle is still there I sure hope they take him. If he’s gone, what to do? I’ve heard rumors of a QB. Will Boller be left? IS Simms worth a first round choice? I’ve also heard rumblings about Larry Johnson.
Wait and see, I guess.
Really?
I don’t follow the Eagles all that much, but don’t they still have Correll (sp?) Buckhalter in their “cultivating” part of camp? I would be really suprised to see the Eagles take Magahee. One promising RB with a blown knee would seem to be enough for me.
Truth be told, I’m not sure any team will roll the dice on WM in the first round. I think he goes mid / late 2nd round.
Big Cowboys fan here, I sure as hell hope they can pick up Leftwich at the No. 5 spot, because god knows Terrell Suggs and Terrance Newman won’t be around for them to have. sigh
I think the top 5 will pan out like this:
I was thinking that you were referring to their selection of Virginia linebacker Jeff Lagemann in the middle of the first round. And although it was kind of a dumb selection – Lagemann was, from what I understand, considered a second-round talent, and the team could have easily traded down before taking him – I, as a Jets fan, did not feel tears were necessary!
Going to be a run on WR’s in the first ten. QB’s may drop a bit. Look for Dorsey to be picked late in the second day. Lots of DT’s in the first 50 picks. Boller at QB will be interesting to see where he goes.
Bears and Vikings may be the wild cards in the draft.
Dallas ain’t taking a QB first round- Jerry Jones would have to admit the massive money spent on Chad Hutchinson was a mistake, and that ain’t happening. Newman goes in the slot.
I think the Raiders take McGahee, unless Boller falls that far.
I know, but they’re the frickin’ Saints. They’ll probably do something completely off the wall and select a K and a P or something. And OT? I dunno, I got the idea the OLine was pretty set, I dunno if I’d use a first rounder when the LBs and CBs need some H-E-L-P.
I would think so as well, but they really need help in the secondary after getting picked apart last year. Still, Boller would be a perfect long-term fit for the Men of Steel.
I doubt Boller falls to them either, but once Boller falls past 10 (noise out of Baltimore is them will not spend the number 10 pick on him), he could fall for a bit, while the run on DT’s, DB’s and WR’s takes place.
