On the clock - 2008 NFL Draft

Here is for any NFL discussion during the run up to the draft, as well as realtime draft commentary as it happens live.

EDIT: Oh, and just for the record, there is no way in hell Jerry Reese is going to trade away Jeremy friggin’ Shockey.

Mmmm, new thread. What’s the consensus this year, NFL Network or ESPN?

I like the knowledge of the ESPN crew, but the past few years the second day has been all stories about the first day and I’m lucky if they give those picks 10 seconds of time. Tell me more about Nick Folk, dang it!

The Dolphins have officially announced Jake Long as their pick at #1.

Am I the only one who is more fascinated by the second, third, and fourth rounds than the first and the last few rounds?

The consensus is YOU SUCK! hehheh. sigh

It must be nice to get the NFL Network. When I called Cablevision to add Showtime, I priced out various packages. When I asked the sales guy if they were ever going to add the NFL Network, he said he would be very surprised if Cablevision didn’t strike a deal before the season started.

I said “Yeah right, that’s the same thing I heard last year.” He pointed out that last year they hadn’t even begun to negotiate, whereas (a month ago when I made this call) now they were under talks and aggressively pursuing a compromise. Who knows.

So my choice is between ESPN with Boomer and Mel or ESPN Radio with Mike & Mike.

Not at all. Though in fairness, my interest in the later rounds is purely because I’m a Giants fan, and they have been great with late-round picks for the last half-dozen or so years.

Later start this year: 3:00pm on Saturday, plus shorter selection windows. Instead of 15 minutes in the first round it will only be 10, and I believe the second round is shortened from 10 minutes to 7.

Oh year, and the first day is now only two rounds instead of the traditional three. Not sure what the reasoning is behind that change, though.

So who goes #2 to the Rams Chris Long or Vernon Gholston? I am guessing Long.

I think that Glenn Dorsey is the pick at number 2, then.

That’s assuming they can’t find someone to trade up for McFadden, of course.

I think that’s a good idea. They can move Carriker back to the end where he might be better suited.

The Rams have been surprisingly hush-hush about their intentions. I think Dorsey is the smart pick and I think that’s what they do.

I just saw on the crawl that the NFL has told the Rams they are NOT allowed to negotiate with anyone now that the Dolphins have signed Long. I think that sucks; I’d love to see the Rams hammer out a deal in the next couple days, then the Falcons follow suit, and have the draft effectively start with the Raiders.

That is weird. Why should the #1 be allowed to get a contract but the rest can’t, even if they’re contingency contracts (IF you are selected by us with the #2 pick, THEN here is the deal). It’s not fair at all that the Dolphins get to contract, but no one else does. I can see it would be risky for a team (i/e if the Rams make a contract with Dorsey and Miami than decides to pick Dorsey), but I don’t think the NFL should be telling teams that they can’t make a contract. I understand the NFL’s reason (the draft has become big business for them) of protecting the draft, but I don’t buy it.

Sounds like BS. If the two parties agree to come to terms, it should be official - Miami is forced to draft Long. Then there’s no reason St. Louis can’t lock up their pick.
I somewhat like the idea of the top teams selecting the players who will take the lowest contract… it might mitigate some of the ridiculous rise in the salaries at the top of the draft.
Shaun Alexander was released. I wonder if he’ll be a starter somewhere. How fast he’s fallen…

Forgot about that. God I hate that guy. First whining like a little bitch when Curtis Martin got the rushing title, and then stealing the MVP from Tiki the following year.

Yeah, yeah, 28 touchdowns. Whatever. It was painfully obvious then and since that his TD production was almost entirely due to the OL, not him. Hell, his whole career was pretty much just the OL. I don’t think his skills have dimished one iota. It’s just that the formerly phenomal OL is now mediocre at best.

How do you win the MVP when you’re such a liability in passing situations that they actually pull you off the field? Pathetic.

Tiki was pulled off the field in GL situations because of scheme; it had abslutely nothing to do with him. Just like how Brandon Jacobs – the goal line back who took Tiki’s touchdowns for two years – was pulled off the field in goal line situations all last year. Does anyone seriously think that Reuben Droughns or Derrick Ward is a better goal line back than Brandon Jacobs? Of course not, it’s just the scheme. (Don’t heap needless wear and tear on the starter; goal line runs are 99% offensive line anyway.)

Tiki got robbed, but since he’s been such a douche, fuck him. Still doesn’t make me resent Alexander any less, though.

I kinda like that idea too. If the Dolphins want to use the first pick of the draft on Mike Humpall (love the name) and sign him to a minimal salary, they should be able to.

I thought they shortened the first day of the draft because it’s now a “primetime” TV slot. That was just my reasoning though.

The Eagles are really interesting this draft. Their entire strategy could change with one trade, and they seem poised to make two or three on or around draft day. You know how the Bengals rejected an offer from the Redskins? Well the Eagles were in on the action too. Rumor has it they’re moving towards Roy Williams of Detroit now, we’ll see.

One thing the Eagles haven’t had in a while is a really effective OLB. I don’t follow college football and this is the first year I’ve really researched any of the incoming players, so I’m not sure what their actual strategy is here. I’m sure they’re going to go either WR/CB/LB with their first pick, but which one depends on the trades they make. If Lito Sheppard is sent packing, they might go CB. If they don’t get a WR via a trade, they might go there.

It’s all very exciting!

You don’t think his broken foot had anything do do with it? He has not been the same since that injury (I should know - he was on my fantasy team when he broke it, dammit!)

I think you overstated your case a little.

The first couple of picks are more or less locks. Very rarely are there surprises in the first round. So those are gimme picks. Let’s try something a little more challenging…

Who will be Mr. Irrelevant?

On a side note, I LOVE draft day trades and intrigue. I’m a big basketball fan but I had never really had a favorite team, so I decided one year that I would follow whoever was the most interesting on the draft that year. It was the year the Blazers pulled like four trades and ended up with the second and fifth (I think?) picks, and I’ve been a Blazers fan ever since.

So now that the Eagles have multiple trade rumors flying around, I find myself doubly interested in the NFL draft. Since I don’t really know any of these incoming players, I only watched in years past for the novelty of it. Now, I’ve been looking forward to it for weeks.

He broke his foot in the third game of the 2006 season. His YPA in 2006 was 3.6. A year later, long after a broken bone has fully healed, he averaged 3.5.

So since his healthy average is almost exactly the same as his broken foot average, I’d say my case is fairly strong that the real reason he fell off a cliff is because his OL stopped opening up gaping holes that let him get three yards past the line of scrimmage before anyone touched him.

ETA: If anyone on the Seahawks should have gotten the MVP in 2005, it was Steve Hutchinson. His departure before the 2006 season is the real reason Alexander came back down to earth.
