2025 SDMB Celebrity Death Pool

Torrez, I just found out, was signed by the Cardinals in 1964 but didn;t get to the majors with them until 1967. I am interested because I’ve had Torrez in DP lists. His aunt cut my hair when I was a little girl and she had pictures of him up in her inhome hair salon.

Bob Uecker was one teammate on that 64 team.

Starting 8 for most games of the Series were:

1B Bill White
2B Dal Maxvill
3B Ken Boyer
SS Dick Groat
LF Lou Brock
CF Curt Flood
RF Mike Shannon
C Tim McCarver

Bob Gibson, Series MVP, was the ace of the pitching staff.

Non-death trivia note. Julian Javier, the Cardinals’ regular second baseman, started 149 games in 1964 but was injured during the team’s 161st game, leaving the World Series to future Cardinals GM Dal Maxvill.

I predict Larry Matthews, Johnny Whitaker, Karen Dotrice, all three of The lost in space kids and Mark Lester will all be dead within 2 years while Dick Van Dyke, June Lockhart, Paul Dooley, Shani Wallis and William Daniels will all live to see their 102nd birthdays although DVD will still be outlived by Julie Walters who will be the last surviving cast member of Mary Poppins I’m sure, as well as the last surviving cast member from Sound of Music

Clem Burke, drummer for Blondie, has succumbed to cancer at 70.

So sorry to read that. He was a fantastic drummer, seriously underrated and deserving to be mentioned with the greats.

Former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel was apparently among those killed in a Dominican nightclub roof collapse.

Weird. According to this article, he survived. Your link is newer, however, so it may be the more accurate of the two.

Confirmed killed was Nelsy Cruz, who was governor of Montecristi, and sister of former big leaguer Nelson Cruz.

I’m seeing a lot of conflicting reports. Those that say Dotel survived all seem to be at least a couple hours old, probably waiting for confirmation to update.

Sports Illustrated seems like a reputable source, but it’s possible there’s false information floating around.

Apparently he was still alive when he was found but died of his injuries later.

Also killed was merengue singer Rubby Perez.

Seeing video of the scene it looks like a bomb went off. It’s hard to fathom how that much damage happened.

Betty Webb, codebreaker for Bletchley Park (i.e. the British effort to crack the Enigma code) and the Pentagon, and wrote a book about the efforts, dead at 101.

(The book is here: No More Secrets: My part in codebreaking at Bletchley Park and the Pentagon: Webb, Betty: 9781837700219: Amazon.com: Books)

Psst. Post #774. I have never done anything like reposting (not) :upside_down_face:  Franco is still dead at 133.

Thanks for the book reference.

While the idea of productions of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music starring Julie Walters is intriguing, I think you mean Julie Andrews. Although Walters was in the deeply pointless Mary Poppins Returns as the cook.

There is now some video of the roof collapse from inside. It looks like there was some warning. People were starting to move out of the way then the whole think came down at once.

Nate Oliver, who played for the Dodgers, Giants, Yankees, and Cubs during a Major League Baseball career that began in 1963 and ended in 1969, has passed away at the age of 84. Oliver also performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” before several games, once “pinch-singing” for Ella Fitzgerald after the legendary jazz artist cancelled her appearance at the last minute.

I believe he was the last surviving main cast member from Are You Being Served? He wasn’t an original cast member but was on for multiple seasons.

Vivienne Johnson is still alive. She appeared in three seasons but only as a recurring guest star (twenty-two episodes) not as a main cast member.
