In June 2024, the Oklahoma Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit brought on by Mother Fletcher and Lessie Benningfield Randle seeking reparations for the vicious attack.**
**Randle, the last known living survivor of the 1921 race massacre, celebrated her 111th birthday on November 10. Hughes Van Ellis, Fletcher’s brother, died at 102 years old in 2023.
Exactly. Just because someone survived something (Holocaust, massacre, plane crash) and then died years later does not mean they are no longer a survivor of that particular incident. You can have survived something then and either be dead or alive now, but you are still a survivor.
That would have been entirely worse. “Sole survivor” implies she was the only person to survive the initial incident. “Last survivor” is closer to the mark.
But she wasn’t the last survivor. “One of the two remaining survivors” is probably the best, though that doesn’t mention her age but IMHO that is less important.
But if it crashed on the border of the U.S. and Canada, where would they bury the survivors?
Uh…anyway.
Stephen Downing–AKA Michael Donovan AKA Sean Baine AKA Adrian Leeds is dead at 87.
He was a police officer in South Central, Los Angeles who moonlighted as a writer for numerous police procedures and other TV shows such as Dragnet, Adam-12, Emergency!, Police Story, Kojak, Quincy, M.E., Get Christie Love!, S.W.A.T., The Rookies, The Streets of San Francisco, Baretta, and Police Woman. After retiring from police work he worked as a producer for T.J. Hooker, Knight Rider, F/X: The Series, and RoboCop, and most importantly the show runner for McGyver who decided that Mac would never carry a gun.
Outside of his work in Hollywood, after retirement he also advocated for an end to the drug war, as well as opposing militarization of police and asset forfeiture laws.
Fuzzy Zoeller, two-time major champion, has passed away at age 74. He won the 1979 Masters and the 1984 US Open. He won 10x on the PGA tour and twice on the PGA Senior Tour.
Fuzzy is probably best known for racist comments he made as Tiger Woods was winning the 1997 Masters which haunted him for the rest of his life.
One place I worked the department secretary was named Zoeller and when he won the Masters pointed the headline to her, “I didn’t even know you played golf, much less went by ‘Fuzzy.’”
I don’t really follow golf so was unaware of the comments, but reading them now - wow. That’s not a “joke” born of casual racism; to say what he felt comfortable enough to say requires something deep-seated. Wonder what his dad was like…
