Bob Pettit, who was the first Most Valuable Player in the NBA, has snagged his last rebound at age 93.
Dee Brock, the original director of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, has twirled her last pompom. She was 96 years old.
Petit played his entire career with the St. Louis Hawks. He was Rookie of the Year in his first season, then MVP in his second. He was the first NBA player to score 20,000 points in his career. But he played at the same time as Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor, and Oscar Robertson among others, and somehow became overlooked by history.
I was just reading his Wiki page. He played center at LSU during the time when freshmen couldn’t play varsity, but in the 3 years he played, he led the SEC in scoring each year. When he went to the pros, he was moved to forward for the first time in his life and obviously adjusted quite well. In Game 7 of the 1957 finals, the Hawks lost to the Celtics in double overtime, a game in which Pettit played all 56 minutes, had 19 rebounds, and scored 39 points. He led the Hawks to the championship the next season.
He also had a memorable guest appearance as a teacher accused of molesting former students in a Season 1 episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
He did so well at his job on that show that many of us thought of him as a principal in real life. I bet he had people come up to him like he’s a principal or teacher. I bet they called him “Mr. Belding”.
I love how the MASH cast said people would ask them medical advice as if they knew anything beyond what was in that week’s script.

Her That’s Life show also brought to light the actions of Nicholas Winton during WWII in saving over 600 children from Prague from the Nazis. There was a recent film about him, but for full effect you really need to see this original moment. Warning: onions may be being cut.
