June 4, 1982 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan opened.

I remember seeing it in the theatre with some friends. IIRC the theatre was far enough away that my mom went also (too far away to drop us off / drive home / come back). She REALLY didn’t like the part with the worms coming out of the ears  .

I still remember being pumped over how much better the effects looked in the TV spots. I can remember telling a friend of mine that we were finally going to see some good ship-to-ship battles, something my little crew of Trek geek friends had been panting for practically since birth.
I didn’t like the part where the worms came out of the ears either. That’s why the next five times I saw the movie that month, I chose that moment to go to the restroom.
The movie holds up far better than any other of the others have or will. The themes are pretty basic (revenge, getting older, facing death) and the premise of large-scale genetic engineering is, if anything, more relevant today than it was in 1982 because we have actually have some idea of how it night be accomplished.
Not only the best of the series, one of the best sci-fi movies of all time.
Funny, I was just thinking about that website today, without realizing that it was the 25th anniversary of the film’s release. Absolutely my favorite Trek film, and the only film that I have all the dialog memorized for. No matter how many times I see it, I still get choked up when I see Kirk turn and spot Spock’s empty chair.
ST2 was the only commercial VHS tape my family owned. You know, “Why own when you can rent them and who’d ever want to see a movie twice?” But a cousin gave us this and I watched it at least three times a week after school. for years. I had the dialog memorized.
I remember hearing Ricardo Montalban talking about his part. He said he played the part as if Khan (sorry, I mean KHAAAAAAAN!) were the hero taking revenge on an evil Admiral Kirk.
But ST2 is possibly the best of the flicks. It really seemed to intertwine some greater relevant themes with the immediate plot.
