I’m buying some models off of www.turbosquid.com. Some of the models that I am interested in are in Poser format. I need them in 3DS or Max format.
I currently have no 3D modeling tools,
Does anyone know of a conversion tool?

Why do you need the models if you have no modeling tools?
Or do you mean you have 3DSMax, but no modeler? Because Max has the modeler included as part of the application.
Anyway, Max can import a lot of formats already, sort of semi-successfully. The best middle format to use is probably .OBJ rather than the native poser format.
3D Game studio will allow me to use models as part of a game. I do not have native artistic skill, so I am buying models rather than creating my own.
Torque will as well, I am told. I *think *it will import more formats than 3DGS, but neither of them import the Poser format into the game.
Ah. So you’re right, you do need a converter.
I don’t think there are any converters that are independent of 3D applications. They’re all plug-ins, and not stand-alones.
My understanding is that I am allowed one bump. Let’s see if any of the weekend crowd knows of anything.
Unfortunately, I don’t know of any standalone conversion programs that support .PZ3 files. I searched for a few minutes and found Poser importers for several 3d programs, but thats a fairly hefty investment for most of them.
Poser itself has a variety of export options… You may try contacting the artist(if possible) and asking for alternate file formats. Another alternative is visiting a 3d site such as CGsociety and getting someone to help you out.
Speaking from experience though, what you are trying to do won’t work very well. The odds of purchasing the model and everything being exactly as you want it are very slim. You’re really going to need a pipeline to get the models into the game that includes a modeler with a format supported by that engine, and ideally Poser itself if you plan on using those models. First off, converters are notoriously buggy, and its not uncommon to have to perform some fixes after a conversion is performed. Another issue you will have is that you won’t be able to make any changes at all to the model.
Your best bet is to find a fellow conspirator knowledgeable in 3d who has the requisite programs already.
Just a quick workaround - DAZStudio is a free application that reads Poser format and, I think, can export OBJ files, and probably other formats too. It’s not as good a renderer as Poser, but for free, what do you expect? Plus that’s not what you want it for. It was released by DAZ (a model supplier more than anything) to increase their potential market.
