Oooh, I’m a American and I’d like to do this, if there are enough Canadians for me
EEK! Can I pretty please still sign up?
I’m American though, and it looks like there are already too many of us
American here. I haven’t been on the SDMB quite as much lately, so I know I’m too late, as I just saw this thread. I’d have participated though. I loved the international candy exchange last year.
I have got to find me a source for Jaffa’s and the Cherry Ripe candy bar(they came from Australia.)
Oooh! I don’t suppose we can file an extension to get in late on this?
American, just in case.
Hmm, maybe we should give it a couple weeks and arrange an international candy exchange? I’d love to try Australian or European candy. Do we have any Dopers in South America or Africa who would be willing to participate?
I’m always interested in these, but by the time I get to the threads, there are 100 Americans and 2 non-Americans so it doesn’t spell success for me. I guess I’ll just keep going to World Market and buying exhorbitantly priced foreign candy. There is this one oversized candy bar that costs $5.99 …and it’s worth it.
Thanks everyone for participating! I’ll be matching people up and notifying them by tomorrow night.
I’ll take an extra American to help out a little with the border parity. (I have a fella from 'Bama living with me – I imagine he’ll be glad to get a little familiar snacking in.)
The following SDMB members were paired and should have received an email from me tonight:
Hello Again – Larry Mudd
Quarkchild – Waenara
bobkitty – Waenara
faithfool – Dr_Paprika
adam yax – Larry Mudd
Unfortunately, at the moment, there are not enough Canadians to pair the following Dopers:
OttoDaFe
congodwarf
silenus
Zebra
meenie7
If there are any latecoming Canadian entries I will consider them, or if there are any communications problems or no-shows from the “paired” list I will draw from the unpaired Dopers in posting order.
Thanks to everyone who participated.
I am just posting to say that I got my package. Anyone else get theirs yet?
The Canadian candy fairy came to my house yesterday. I got lots and lots of chocolate, including a giant dark chocolate bar whose packaging claims one serving is half the bar (like I needed an excuse to eat a whole bunch at once.) Thanks Waenara!
I also received a package from the kind waenara (who I hope received my package as well!). So far the results have been yummy- the hazelnut/choco bar was very good, and I like the Canadian version of Smarties. On to some licorice tonight!
Within a one block radius of where I sit, there are two stores that I know of that carry candy from around the world, including several dozen American examples (with cute stick-on French labels to comply with Canadian labelling laws). Are such stores rare in the U.S.? I can’t say that it’s ever something that I’ve looked into when I’ve been there.
Count me in. I am an Americian
Erm. How rude of me. I did receive your package, but I’m afraid the envelope didn’t work out so well – everything was completely (utterly!) flattened, except for a Tootsie Roll, a roll of mostly-intact Sweet-Tarts, and some Nerds, which by some cruel irony are all available here. Everything else merged into a sticky paste about 5mm thick. It was rather a disappointment, but a fun idea.
I live on the back edge of the middle of nowhere, and we’re lucky to get basic food items in our groceries. A store such as you describe would likely be limited to a more urban area, which also equates to a HUGE price markup.
I’m worried that the package I sent didn’t make it… hey waenara, can you confirm?
Hi - sorry for the delay in checking back in. I have received both my packages, although I think bobkitty’s was extra-delayed because I wasn’t in when it was delivered, so my apartment manager accepted delivery, and then forgot to give it to me for a few days.
Quarkchild sent a lot of really local candy from California. The organic dark chocolate was great and the chocolate-peanut butter banana slug tasted really good, although it kind of felt strange to eat something shaped like a slug. I think the Cadbury caramel eggs might have sent me into sugar shock.
At first I felt really bad when I saw bobkitty’s package, because it was a fairly large box and I felt bad that my package was a lot smaller - however it just turns out that she’s a better packer than me, and used filler material to cushion the huge chocolate bars she sent. Also, marshmellow peeps take up a lot of space!
That is truly discouraging. What did they do, drive over it with a tank? (I’ve sent similar packaging many times, including into war zones, without problems!)
I have one last package of peeps so when I get a chance, I’ll re-send you some fresh USA-an goodies.
By the way, the Giant creme egg thingy was sooo good – with its dark-chocolate exterior it blows a traditional cadbury egg out of the water!
We have KitKat here, but the packaging looks different. Smarties were greatly enjoyed as was Mr. Big.
Heh. I had the impression it spent some time under some heavy boxes in a hot truck.
No no! Thanks for offering, but postage is too expensive. Besides, I must confess that ate as much of the Peep-paste as I could. (I think the powdered sugar is designed to keep the sticky stuff off your fingers, but squish 'em up a bit and they become sticky, keyboard-and-mouse destroying confections – but still guiltily pleasurable.)
Cool! I hope the interior was fluffier than a Cadbury egg, though – I think scaling up the Cadbury filling to that size would be dangerous.
I have yet to make things right with adam – I fell down on my end, no reply to his e-mail, nothing. Uncharacteristically (I hope) jerkish behavior from me. Got distracted and bummed out, I guess. I still have the Canada Post box I picked up for him, but I never got around to filling it and mailing it out. I’ll try to find the time to do that this week. :o :smack:
