Fourth Annual (I Think) Canadian-American Candy Exchange! (2007)

Welcome to the 2007 Canadian-American Candy Exchange.

What is it?
A chance for Americans and Canadians to experience the uniquely delightful candies which are only available in the other locale.

When is the Deadline?
If you wish to participate, please post to this thread stating your nationality by 11:59pm EDT March 18, 2007. No latecoming entries accepted. Its just too complicated for lil ol’ me.

How Will I Get a Partner?
Make sure your email address is current in your profile. Or post it to the thread if you do not wish to have it in your profile. Or email me your address separately, after posting in the thread. Point being, if I don’t know your email address, you won’t get a partner.

After all entries are posted, I will match up everyone and email you individually to notify you of your partner. From there you will contact each other to exchange addresses, etc.

In the event of an unequal Canadian:American ratio, partners will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. In other words, if we run out of Canadians, it’s just tough cookies.

What if I’m Canadian and Really, Really Nice?
If you are Canadian and would be willing to exchange with 2 partners a)you are very nice and b)state that in your post and c)hi, opal!

What if I’m Broke and/or Lazy?
Please do not say you will participate unless you have the inclination, time, and financial means to do so. “Grinching” your partner is rude and quite against the spirit of the thing. See below for expected costs.

How Much Should I Spend?
No party shall spend more than $10 (local currency) on candy per partner.

How Much Will Shipping Cost?
US Participants should checkout the “Global Priority Flat Rate Envelope (large)” for your shipments. It’s only $7.50 for up to 4 lbs (a big savings over parcel post if your package weighs over 1lb).

Otherwise, Americans should expect to pay around $15 for a 2lb (1 kilo) package), and Canada Post rates are fairly comparable at the same weight (~$15 CAN)

What About Customs?
You will have to fill out a short customs form for your package. Be general in your descriptions to discourage poaching.
Good: “packaged candy”
Bad: “luscious, creamy, Mackintosh Toffee”

Send only packaged, commercially available products. This will smooth your package’s way through customs. (To my knowledge there were no major customs problems last year despite the warnings of naysayers.)

What Kind of Things Should I Send?
Ask your partner, but generally Americans can’t get anything Cadbury except Creme Eggs and Mini eggs, anything Kinder including Kinder Surprise, and many Nestle products. Generally Canadians can’t get anything Necco, Marshmallow Peeps and related products from JustBorn, many Hershey’s products, some Mars products, some Willy Wonka products, and regional specialties like buckeyes, pralines, etc.

Let the Exchange Begin!

I’m in! I’ve done this exchange a couple times before and it was always lots of fun.

I’m Canadian, and in the event of a Canadian-shortage I’d be willing to exchange with two people. My email is in my profile.

Pick me! Pick me!

I’m an American. There’s a candy store near me. E-mail is in the profile.

Pick me! Pick me!

I am a Canadian living in the States, and would love to participate.

I just KNOW more people want to participate! Please feel free to PM or email me any questions you might have.

I’ll do it, but I have a request.

Instead of candy, I’d love some St. Hubert’s chicken seasoning. In exchange, I’ll make a trip to Chocolate World in Hershey, Pennsylvania, so I’ll probably be able to take care of anyone’s Hershey needs.

Obviously, I’m an American.

Robin

I’m an American and I’m SO in!

Canadian. Really Nice Guy[sup]TM[/sup]. I’ll jump in.

Incidentally, we get Marshmallow Peeps in Ontario. Pink, yellow, blue, etc. Only around Easter, though. (Zellers carries them, at the very least. Probably Wal-Mart, too.) Necco wafers, though, you can only get at specialty shops (Sugar Mountain, for example.)

I am in the States and if you need candy in Canada, I’m in.

I know this is all about candy, but if you would like something else, like chicken seasoning, put it in the e-mail.

I’m in the US. My mom’s Canadian and has gotten me into all the nifty Canadian candy. Grr. So I’m in. E-mail’s in my profile. Any weird non-American stuff, I’m willing to go to Cost Plus World Market for, since I live right by one. Unfortunately, they don’t have Cherry Blossoms…

Canadian here, ready to exchange sweet, sweet candy with an American! My exchangee can let me know if they have any special requests, and I’ll do my best.

I’ll take part. American; e-mail in profile, or go to my webpage.

Me, too, me too! American. E-mail’s in profile.

Time’s running out!

I’m in.
American here. I loves me some candy.

Sounds like a really cool idea. I would love to do it if it weren’t for the shipping cost. (I can get a lot of Mexican candy here that isn’t available in Canada or much of the US, too.) The extra $7.50 is a lot to me right now. Maybe next time.

Canadian here, I’m in.

My email address is in my profile.

I’m in, unless you have too many Americans already. Which is what I am: American. Which I think maybe you knew.

Count me in.

I am Canadian and my e-mail address is in my profile.

If you need Americans, I’m willing and able. The weirder the better, and my email is in my profile.
