4 Alabama football players arrested for a mugging.

Headline calls this a robbery. I’d call it a mugging. These guys beat the crap out of that student. Then they beat & rob another student a hour later.

Some of the kids these coaches are recruiting just shouldn’t be in college. They’re basically street thugs.

Arkansas had some players arrested and thrown off the team a couple years ago. That was a dorm room robbery. This is a lot worse. Three big muscle guys beating the crap out of one student. :frowning: Thats just outrageous.

Let me guess…“This is yet another example of why college athletes (read: BCS-conference football and men’s basketball players) should be paid.”

(And now for some ready-made replies, and the responses to those replies:

“They already get paid - with college scholarships.”
“Then take their scholarships away and pay them what it cost to attend college plus a little extra for expenses.”

“Other sports have the same problems, but you just don’t hear about it unless it’s a major football or men’s basketball program.”
“Other sports don’t make the money that, among other things, keep those ‘other sports’ in business. The only reason half of the major schools aren’t just football and men’s basketball is the NCAA requirement that each Division I school sponsor six men’s and six women’s sports.”

"How do you pay the men withoutDON’T YOU DARE BRING UP TITLE IX")

The only part of the story I found outrageous was that these clowns stole a credit card and used it to buy snacks from a vending machine. I mean, really, at least go buy a stereo or something!

It was a debit card, and:
(a) why take a chance of going somewhere where somebody is going to ask you for ID before you can use the card, and
(b) how do you use a debit card if you don’t know the PIN?
I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it was more along the lines of a student food service card, which would explain why it was just used in a vending machine.

First of all, these guys are clearly not the sharpest apples in the basket. Second, do you have a debit card? You can always ask for the thing to be run as credit and avoid having to use a PIN.

Just out of curiosity- were the students who claimed to have been mugged on the Notre Dame defensive line?
(Speaking as an Irish Catholic who STILL can’t believe how outmanned and outgunned ND was…)

How this shakes out will depend on how much the team needs them. If they’re non-starters, they’ll be kicked out. If they’re starters, they’ll go on “internal discipline”, which is code for “they won’t miss a down”.

Thus, based on the OP, you think they must not be starters?

Just think, in 20 years ESPN will have a film in it’s “50 for 50” series celebrating these thugs like they did recently for the Miami Hurricanes.

Well, it’s easy to suspend anyone in February. When the season draws nigh is when we see what character Saban has.

You don’t know about Saban’s character after he lied his way through a spineless departure from the Miami Dolphins? You don’t know about Saban’s character when he denounces Florida for doing what his own team did? You don’t know about Saban’s character when he oversigns recruits and puts them on medical leave?

I think we have a pretty good idea already about Saban’s character. Whether these suspensions stand, or fall once the season starts, won’t be much of a gamechanger.

No need to wait that long: Saban kicked them off the team.
Weird. For some reason, this Nick Saban Dismisses 4 Alabama Players from Team After Criminal Charges won’t show when I use the button to post a link.

OK. I give up. I’ve tried multiple times to link to the Bleacher Report article and it just won’t work.

In any event, Saban kicked all four players off the team.
