40 Year Old Virgin - no thread yet?

I have been on vacation for the past two weeks - first time in years!

Anyway, saw the movie - one of the funniest I have seen. Came back expecting to see a thread on it - nada, zilch, zero?

Any love for the Virgin?

I was just talking about this movie with some coworkers. I have to say, from the previews I thought this would be a movie on par with a Rob Schneider film. The movie itself was actually pretty good. It was funny and it wasn’t just some stpuid let’s get the 40 year old guy laid sort of thing. Pretty decent.

I hadly ever go to movies, especially comedies. I was pleased with this though. The group of guys and their interaction seemed true and genuine (well, true at least in my experiences). Corell did a fine job of playing the role too.

Since some people have actually seen this movie, can one of you explain the “Ahhhhhhhhh, Kelly Clarkson!” bit I keep hearing in the radio commercials?

Carell wouldn’t allow for fake hair in the chest waxing scene, it was his real hair being pulled out. Because of this, they could only do the scene in one take, and all the things he screams while his hair is being ripped out are true reactions to the pain. It wouldn’t surprise me if none of the things he yelled were scripted. And in that case, you’ll have to ask Steve why he was compelled to yell Kelly Clarkson’s name.

On a t.v. interview, he said he yelled out that name for the simple fact that it sounds like a good name to yell out.

I saw the movie on Friday, and loved it, even the ending that came out of nowhere.

The interactions between the guys at the store seemed real. The manager looked familiar-what else has she been in?

Jane Lynch, who played the manager, is one of those “working actors in Hollywood” who has been in a bunch of stuff. She’s probably best known for her work in the Christopher Guest-Eugene Levy mockumentaries Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. In the first she played an ice queen dog trainer and in the second a former porn star turned folk singer.

I liked it because it is honestly not a good movie… it’s a funny one. It was rough and you can really tell that Carrell and Apatow have a background in sketch and improv (the whole premise is based on a scene Carrell used to do at Second City). There’s several scenes that are just there for the jokes and serve no other purpose (when the black guy’s girlfriend shows up to confront Andy for example).

The Age of Aquairus epilogue did make me lose my shit.

I also feel almost ashamed to say but the girl who played the teenage daughter… is the hottest girl I’ve seen in a movie lately. And the twins! Man…

I’m a little put off by the idea that a 40-year-old virgin has to look like he belongs on “Blue’s Clues”.

Yeah - what was up with that, er, them? The girl had a huge bosom - and it was completely out of sync with Catherine Keener, the actress who played her mom…

I really enjoyed it. Yes, many of the scenes were ther just for one joke, but most of them are really funny jokes. On the one hand, one could say that it’s more than just a vulgar sex comedy. On the other hand, one could say it’s an extremely well-made vulgar sex comedy.

I must admit that since I saw it, I’ve had one line stuck in my head:

“I finished. Then I stole the dog.”

Guys, the film opens on 2nd Sept here in the U.K., so can we please respect spoilers?

I think that he looked fine with the chest hair. Certainly better than he did with parts of it waxed off. Heh.

He had really well groomed and nice chest hair… I’ll send them a pic of mine… then they can see what a sweater looks like.

I love Catherine Keener and she lent a great spark to the movie. All the interactions and characters were a lot of fun and I’m glad it turned out to be more than a raunchy physical comedy sketch.

I’m just curious, but why on earth would you even open the thread then? Assuming that this is a movie you want to see, I mean.

I’m just wondering how many of us guys thought, “Wow! I wish I had chest hair that thick!” – I know I did! I like my chest hair, but he has better coverage than I do. This whole “hairless” trend going on now – I just don’t get it!

I think part of the dramatic license is that a man who is sexually inexperienced will have a certain stale, nerdy appearance. If Carell’s character looked and acted like the clueless middle-manager cliché he plays on The Office, that wouldn’t make his celibacy any more obvious; he’d just look like any other guy.

They could at least let the guy have some facial hair!
