40 Year Old Virgin - no thread yet?

I absolutely loved it! I knew it wouldn’t be a Rob Schneider-type comedy, not with Judd Apatow behind it, but I was still a little worried. Steve Carrell is adorable and completely sympathetic (if his fake sex story during the poker game doesn’t have you in stitches, you are a robot), and it was nice to have a female lead that wasn’t just boobs and hair and merely there to get, well, fu**ed (thank you, Judd and Steve). Maybe a teensy bit long, but there were no real dud scenes that got sickly sweet or boring. The most underrated cast member (at least from the reviews I’ve read) was definitely Seth Rogen, the bearish tattooed guy (“Hey, you should have sex with her then get her to write you a cheque for $12 for your birthday”). And since he worked with Judd on Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared, including writinbg, you just know he improved most of his lines.
As for the daughter, it was nice to see a pretty and “real” actress rather than some generic starlet. As for her boobs, that’s biology, folks. Why would they have to, uh, match her mother’s? Plus Keener probably weighs about 20 lbs less than her. Come on, grow up.

I didn’t mean my observation about the daughter’s boobs to be smutty - it was meant to be a simple observation - most folks look like their parents. In that particular way, the pairing of those two actresses seemed way off. That’s it - my point was - wow, if it was that noticeable to me, they MUST be really different.

No biggie - you lighten up!

I loved it. Andy was a character you could root for, but not feel guilty for laughing at, and his coworkers were a riot. There were a few akward scenes I didn’t care for, but those are to be expected in a comedy like this. I agree with the sentiments expressed about Andy’s girlfriend. She was a genuine character that contributed to some pretty funny scenes, not just a contrived “nice girl” character written around a nice pair of legs and tits. Overall, a solid 8/10. I plan on buying the DVD, and I expect a lot of people to be quoting it when it’s released.

Oh man, I hear you on that. Very sexcellent. Of course I’m still a teen, so I can say this without guilt. But hey, don’t worry. I’m sure she’s 20 or so in real life. The camera (and pounds of makeup) have a magical ability to shed years off of actresses

Well, I personally didn’t find her to be drop dead gorgeous (not that I’d kick her out of bed for eating crackers or anything), but her name is apparently Kat Dennings and she was born in 1986. So she’s 19 and OK for you dirty old men to ogle.

Of course, from her blog:

I was wondering.

He has a pretty good carpet there on his chest. But his back was completly smooth. Is that normal. Can you be a muppet on the front and bare on the back?

I wasn’t expecting much and wasn surprised by how many times I laughed. I liked how grounded and realistic the characters were. His friends in the movie were a stitch and it was nice that Carrell gave a lot of the funniest lines and even entire scenes to the other actors (the “Do you know how I know you’re gay?” scene with Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan, for instance) . I also concur with those who liked the Catherine Keener character. She was a three dimensional character with a real personality and was believable as a person that Carrel would fall in love wit. I loved her diatribe on the phone when she thought Carrell was a telemarketer.

Even a lot of the little moments and incidental characters were funny. The kid trying to buy the boots in Keener’s store, for example.

It was a tad long and the tension at the end seemed perfunctary and movie-ish, but all in all, it was an entertaining movie.

I was very surprised at how built Steve Carrell looked in that movie. He was pretty damn buff - he looked good for someone who was supposed to be forty years old.

I also never noticed how huge his nose is.

I have a friend who is fairly flat-chested and her daughter is the opposite. You can pick up that sort of build from the father’s side of the family.

…Naked.

[cheeky anecdote time]

Pfft. My mother is 5 foot nothing, one hundred and nothing pounds, with wee B breasts. I’m 5’7, 160, with heaving 38Ds! (“38Ds” written out looks like a smilie for drooling, nearsighted asshat - cool!) Sometimes DD, depending on who makes the bra.
I was once observed by a woman my mother worked with for years, who hadn’t seen me since I was a preteen, as being “well endowed”. My mother responded that I certainly didn’t get them from her. I couldn’t resist: “That’s right, I get them from my father!” My father responds, in a small voice, “Yay!”

This film looks kind of cutesy… is it good in a cheesy kind of way? I think I’d like to see it, either way, just to judge for myself. Is it corny, or is it kind of witty?

Not sure how I missed that. :smack: But there you go.

(In case my above post was not clear for lack of smilies, it was all meant in a light-hearted manner, and not meant to be “proof” of anything but my own genetic history)

I clearly stand corrected in the breastal-size-inheritance department! Man, I gotta do a lot more field work to complete my research…

Back to the OP: cool, I guess the Virgin gets a lot of love!

Parts of it are cute, more sweet though, and though the previews make it look like a raunch-fest, there’s a lot more to it than that. As others have said, there is a variety of funny characters who are three-dimensional.

What was the song that his boss sings to him; she thinks it’s a romantic Guatamalan ballad but it ends in “futbal”

 Well helloooooooo m’dear! Come here often to talk about your gonzagas?

…with a pair of h00ters resting on the top of his head. Waaay cool!

(resembling that remark)

Oh and by the way - I found it laugh-out-loud hilarious consistently through - something that very rarely happens to me. There is a TMI component - it IS about sex after all - but not really raunchy, per se - more just overt. It has a sweetness about it - the characters are well developed (enough about breasts, okay?) and I cared about them…

Go see it.

I’d say that my back hair is 1/3 as abundant as my chest hair.

I left out smilies too. My friend had to assure me that her daughter was indeed her own. I was skeptical.

Gonzagas? Dammit, man, we’re trying to talk about breasts! Why did you have to say that and make me think about John Stockton and his short shorts!

Anyway: I saw this movie tonight, and a lot of it was screamingly funny. Some scenes were sort of unnecessary, but there was some great dialogue. Carrell’s character was genuinely a nice guy, and not just a clueless figure of ridicule. Keener had a real character. And it had the best ending of any movie I’ve seen in ages.

I think the highest praise I could give this movie is that it seemed very natural. There was a rare connectivity that most movies nowadays seem to loose on the cutting room floor.

This was a brilliant character driven movie with heart. Everybody knows one of the characters in this movie personally and it enfolds you in a natural uncontrived dialogue. Very well written, I hate to compare but it’s on par with Kevin Smith…but not. It may be better. It’s raunchy but real.

Anyone see Steve Carrell on The Daily Show last night? It was HILARIOUS.

for the first 2 minutes - at least - he and Jon Stewart worked an awkward silence, only pausing to tandemly pick up their mugs and take sips. The crowd was edgy and giggly. Really really funny - you have to see it to get it; I am doing a poor job here.

After that, they slipped between shtick and real talk - all very nice.
