40 years ago: Chet Huntley signs off

Dick Cavett Interview, Part 2
*With Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Janis Joplin, and Raquel Welch! (What’s up with that accent, Raquel?)

The story goes that Huntley had been saying for years that he would quit as soon as he had the money to retire and buy a ranch in Montana. Then, one day in early 1970 he walked into Reuven Frank’s office (Frank was president of NBC News), showed Frank his bank book, and announced that he was retiring.

Huntley bought his Montana ranch, and died four years later.

Raquel Welsh is even more beautiful today than she was forty years ago.

Not a ranch, actually, but the Big Sky ski resort, just outside of Yellowstone.

Holy shit, I’m old.

Yeah that is a helluva panel.

Watching Chet leer at Raquel Welch is priceless. I remember him as really haggard looking, but he doesn’t look so bad on the Cavett show.

Those Cavett DVD’s are great; I wish somebody would dig out tapes of David Susskind’s show and put them out on DVD. I see there’s 14 eps on Hulu, but they look pretty mainstream.

He had one show with a crowd from Warhol’s stable that still gives me weird dreams.
