3rd July 1971 and Jimmy Morrison passes away. (Little while to wait for American and Canadian Dopers).
Touch Me - the one Doors track that convinces me that if Mr. Mojo Risin’ had been a little bit more circumspect about his drug use, he would have shortly replaced Elvis as the fat rocker with the big tacky Vegas show.
My most memorable experience in Paris was going to have a beer and a cig with Jim about 15 years ago.
Never saw the guy in concert, but visited his grave in Paris.
My first rock concert was The Doors at the Singer Bowlin New York on August 2, 1968 (with The Who as the lead-in).
A very memorable concert, as the article describes.
Colabri - was the article a fair summation?
Wow Colibri- if only I could have been there.
Seems like quite a few of we Dopers have visited his grave. Maybe we should have a Dopefest there
The very first LP I purchased with my own money was the first album by The Doors. I still have it. It’s worn so thin you can see through it, but the sentimental value means it will always have a place in my collection.
He was truly a great talent - and as the posters back in the day said:
Janis, Jimi and Jim - why 27?
The fact that Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison all died at age 27 is still kind of freaky to me. At my age, I would so like to have seen/heard what they would have created had they lived longer. They were just kids.
There is of course the 27 Club. A few more are members.
I was flipping channels this morning between Wimbledon and the French Open Golf tournament. A journeyman English golfer named James Morrison was a co-leader going into today’s 4th round. He was choking his brains out and finished 6 shots from the win. I then got on Twitter and saw “RIP Jim Morrison” was trending and I was WTF?, poor guy shoots a bad round and it is trending on Twitter?
40 years ago, I was on a little island and hadn’t heard a radio in weeks. Got in a car, and as I turned the key, heard “…orrison was 27.” Shit.
My kid ended up being even a bigger fan than I was, and I said that had he lived another decade, The Lizard King would’ve been playing Vegas like The King (possibly in a matching sequined jumpsuit). My line was: “Death was a great career move”.
To tell you the truth, we were pretty far from the stage and I don’t recall nearly as much of an uproar as is described in the article. There may have been more of a scuffle near the stage.
I do remember being impressed by the Who destroying their instruments.
A few weeks later I saw Janis Joplin (with Big Brother and the Holding Company) and Jimi Hendrix on the same bill at the Singer Bowl.
Eventually, Colibri grew rich when other rock stars began bribing him to stay away from their concerts.
Yeah Colibri- when did you see Marc Bolan?
I had FREE tickets to go see Janis at (I think) Grant Park in Chicago. However, that same day I was invited to some stupid party that at the time seemed more important and said, “Oh well, I’ll go see Janis next time she’s in town…”
Yeah, right…she died shortly afterwards. I can still kick myself for blowing that opportunity!
Never had a chance to see the Doors with Jim Morrison though.
Pamela: “Geez, Jim, you stink. Would it KILL you to take a bath?”
When I was a kid we used to wait for “The End” to come on the radio or to hear “Five to One.” Then we’d draw cartoons of him running around pantsless and getting into mischief.
A few decades later I wrote a viagra commercial about him.
Jim Morrison: When I slipped into unconsciousness 32 years ago people were saying it was The End. But thanks to Viagra The Unknown Soldier can still shout Hello, I Love You!
Viagra can really Light My Fire! But for some odd reason no one will Touch Me
