41% of Americans support Syrian immigration

There are between three and six months of subsistence benefits awaiting Syrian refugees, so I’m not sure why welfare or food stamps are relevant.

Technically, food stamps and WIC are part of those “subsistence benefits”.

Frankly, I don’t know why people get so steamed up about giving new arrivals who show up with nothing or nearly so housing and food for a couple months while they get established. If we didn’t, those same folks would no doubt bitch about homeless refugees camping out in parks and/or needing to remove their frozen corpses from the sidewalks of Chicago and New York during the winter when the penniless arrivals freeze to death from lack of shelter.

It’s temporary, people! As in, not forever, just for a short while.

And yes, Ellis Island type immigrants also benefited from various forms of assistance, from charities providing housing to English language lessons to public schooling for their children.

No, the benefits provided to refugees are either furnished by private organizations (and funded by the federal government) or the receiving states directly.

What, you think refugees are somehow banned from applying for food stamps or WIC? They’re allowed to apply and receive them, and many do.

Yes, they initially receive housing, clothing, food, and some cash but that is a one time grant to the refugee, intended to last 30-90 days. After that they are expected to find work. Not surprisingly, the initial job(s) they hold do not always pay particularly well and thus they may need additional assistance, just like the rest of the working poor in the US. But hey, don’t take my word for it - here’s a quote direct from the US Federal Government (emphasis added):

Refugees ARE eligible for publicly funded benefits, including those from the Federal Government provided they are otherwise eligible (income, etc.) Illegal aliens are not eligible for such benefits, but refugees are here legally.

Frankly, I prefer that we provide assistance to people when they initially arrive to maximize their prospects of becoming self-supporting members of society. What’s the alternative? Letting them languish as strangers in a strange land, baring keeping ahead of starvation (or maybe not even that!)?

That quote does not say anything about WIC or food stamps.

Are you claiming food stamps and WIC are not publicly funded benefits?

I could tell you I met refugees at work and rung up their groceries at the checkout, after which they pay with a food stamp card or WIC but would you take my say so on that?

What makes you think they are NOT allowed to receive those benefits?

So, you’re OK with letting them in, but you want to be strict with them? Given their limited options, they would likely be cool with that. Just guessing.

To whom are you addressing your question?

You can answer if you wish, I am not in a position to assign obligations.

Of course they are. Refugees are eligible for some publicly funded benefits. That source says nothing about whether food stamps or WIC are among them.

What other publicly funded benefits do you think there are?

Well, TANF if they have minor children. SSDI if they are disabled and can convince the administration that they are (this can be harder than you think). Um… what else is there?

But hey, for the Google-impaired, this document explicitly mentions “refugee” more than 30 times. Yes, they are eligible.

Okay, that’s a better citation.

Wait, they didn’t even bring their own food? Probably left their cash and credit cards back there too! Well, how very convenient! They’ll just have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps! OK, OK, we’ll give them the bootstraps, but not the whole damned boots! No reason to start in coddling these terrorists, not gonna have a Muslim atheist for President much longer!

Probably the same source as this is being used for this discussion about benefits for refugees in the US, but figured I’d drop it just in case:

Here are the SNAP provisions for non-US citizens:

OK, THAT time I got the sarcasm!

You almost owe me a new keyboard.
