I have no idea whether it would be practical, considering how much more emphasis 4th ed seems to have on the battlegrid, but I was wondering if we had enough interested parties around here to whip up a play-by-post game in the new system? I don’t think I know the rules well enough to DM, but I’d be happy to play if we had an interested DM and a few players.
I might be interested if we start sometime after the 21st when I have real, reliable internet access. Set-up before that would be fine, just no actual game. But I suspect that there’s not enough interest on this board to run another D&D game; we have only one game reliably running right now.
Might be in for it.
I didn’t have a kickoff time in mind, so if we have enough people the 21st’d be fine.
I’m a little skeptical about whether or not we can make it work well without that damn grid that half the damn powers seem to have in mind, but the DM’ll probably be able to make do without.
Interrested, yes… Although a bit skeptical. The three other RPG’s I’ve joined here seem to have petered out pretty well. Put me down as interrested but cautious.
I would be interested, if you will take a D&D newbie I will do my best to follow along and not ask stupid questions.
I think you’re actually in luck: I’ve found a lot of the new rules vague and confusing, especially coming from 3.5th edition, but I suspect that if you’re new to the format, 4th ed will be easier to learn than its predecessors. ^^
Yeah…it doesn’t seem too confusing so far, from my reading of the Player’s Handbook. I gather that 3rd ed. was much more complicated.
I think each edition has it’s high and low points. Some aspects of combat in 3rd ed. were actually a lot simpler, since the precise position of each combatant didn’t matter nearly as much. You needed to know roughly where everyone was in relation to each other to target AoE spells, and you had to keep track of when someone provoked an attack of opportunity by maneuvering on the battlefield, but unless you really enjoyed the maps and figurines, you could manage 90% of your combat needs without visual indicators.
4th ed, however, takes a huge leap towards the Warhammer style of play, and I think it practically necessitates a full battlegrid now unless you’re simplifying things, which is what we would probably do here.
On the other hand, character building and character progression was hilariously and sometimes painfully more involved in 3rd edition. Personally, I preferred the old way better, since it allowed a lot more freedom to either do something stupid as you built your guy, or to do something really clever. At the moment 4th ed is giving me a more MMORPG-esque vibe with the way it spoon-feeds you throughout the design process, but I’m trying to hold off judgment until I’ve played a few games.
Can I be a Warforged Artificer?
Well I’m not sure if we can find a DM… I know that I’m personally far too uncomfortable with my grasp of the new ruleset to run a game.
Actually, I was calling attention to the fact that the first expansion races and classes are now available on Wizards’ website.
Are they? ooooo.
I’d be up for it - I’m still a newbie to it, but i’ve got the books and done plenty of reading (some mates and I - all newbs - are doing a game).
