My nearly 5 month old daughter has begun chewing on her tounge (ok, gumming it :D) She has appeared to develop a small bruise, or what looks like a bruise on the right side of her tongue.
Is this a fairly normal event? Anything for me to be worried about? Or are we just being paraniod new parents? (I suspect this is the case)
With her limited hand-mouth coordination (objects anyway), she sometimes gums her toys, but sometimes, it’s just that wee little tongue sticking out that gets gummed…
You may want to mention it to the doctor, but as long as she doesn’t gum it to the point she makes it bleed, I don’t think it’s going to hurt her. She’ll stop doing it if it hurts her.
Meanwhile, make sure she has other clean stuff to chomp on. She may be getting ready to cut a tooth.
Now, where’s the pictures? Must see baby pictures…
That’s what I thought, we noticed it last night, and I was thinking about it today.
My wife will be thrilled with the concept of teeth. (Breast feeding, and NO, no PICS!)
As for the pictures, it’s shameful. I’m an intelligent IT guy, I can build web sites on Win2k/2k3 servers, but somehow can’t figure out my Comcast web page. Someday I’ll get some up. But, just think of the cutest little girl you’ve ever seen, and make her cuter!
And just to tick off the Moms & other Dads out there, she’s slept 5+ hours at a time overnight since nearly the first week. Now she sleeps 10 hours, with only a short wakeup break in the AM (7-8AM) for some breakfast, followed by another 3-4 hours of sleep.
Isabella gummed her tongue all the time and now that she has 4 teeth she’s added her own brand of music. I’ve never noticed bruising but it wouldn’t surprise me at all.
IANAD but experience tells me keep an eye on it and see if it goes away in a few days.
RE: the BF thing, I understand completely. The books say teeth are covered so no poin, but I’d love those authors to feel the pain when my 8 month old chomps on me. I think she is amused by my howls!
And cute pics. Looks like mom. That’s quite a set of toes!

The toes were a required photo. We call the “ring” toe the “McGrath toe”. It’s a family characteristic. Our own genetic mutation. Many a joke was made to Mrs. Butler (who was not amused) that if she didn’t come equiped with the toe, off to the genetics lab!
Just think, in 25 years time, she’ll be all grown up and mature, maybe have a child of her own…
…and she’ll still occassionally bite her tongue! You’d think we’d learn to avoid it eventually, but noooo, a well co-ordinated adult will still manage to sneak a bit of tongue between the teeth when taking a bite out of something. It’s a wonder we got this far.
