50 unexplainable photos

Indeed. Not only the ‘Mavis kicks the winning field goal’ pose, but the woman’s face and evident nipples are exactly as Kliban would have drawn them.

I tink I taw a putty-tat!

#34 - I guess they are wearing masks because they are having their legs or bodies judged. IIRC, they used to do that at beauty contests.
#2 - Is that’s the virginity thing, that’s a hell of a lot of blood.

Whole lot of WTF in the others.

#8 - Is from Superman II.
#14 - A young Orson Wells. Aren’t smoking kids cute?
#30 - The one on the right could be a young Winston Churchill. Mind you, most babies look like Winston Churchill.
#44 - British Rail’s response to the problem of leaves on the line.

#39 – The wasabi watermelon was one of the first and least successful products of genetic manipulation.

#1: Suffragettes?

#10: Either Halloween, or the most avant-garde production of A Christmas Story ever dreamed of.

#14: Vito Corleone, age 8?

#15: You can only push a widowed flapper so far before she flaps back.

#17: Proto-furries?

#23: “Well, leftenant, I couldn’t just let the pussycat get away after what it did to my trousers…”

#25 i’m guessing is from the Hogwart’s Class of 1906 yearbook.

#34: Some sort of beauty pageant where the girls’ faces are hidden?

#35: I’m agreeing with Ale, that was TOTALLY taken at a tea party rally last year.

#36: The first costume design for the pig-slaves in Daleks In Manhattan.

#40: Obviously some sort of old-timey photo edit.

#42: The kids are obviously Boy Scouts, but it’s hard to tell what the poster behind them is about. Forest fire prevention?

#43: AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

#45: I’m not sure which perplexes me the most; the fact that Artemis Gordon has gotten in way over his head, or the look on the face of the girl whose family he’s infiltrated.

Title?

I think #10 is Krampus, who travels around with St. Nicholas punishing the bad children – the bundle of twines is emblematic. The boy must’ve been very naughty when there’s two of him, though…

#32 makes me think of a verse in the Nick Cave song Nature Boy:

You took me back to your place
And dressed me up in a deep sea diver’s suit
You played the patriot, you raised the flag
And I stood at full salute

Not that that clears anything up (other than illustrating that the practice is apparently more common and older than I would have thought). (Oh wait, the patriot raising the flag is actually in #35. No, I’m not going to speculate about the implications of putting those photos in this context…)

#38 “Strangely Daddy, my nipples seem to be magnetically attracted to your prize winning cucumber!”

Sorry, I meant a shop. I meant to link to it, but I forgot…here it is. It’s a really neat little place…it’s got a marble lunch counter and soda fountain which are original to the building, which was built in the 20s and was quite the hotspot back in the time when movies were filmed in Chicago. The hotel was the place where famous and glamorous people like Anna Held lived or stayed, so it’s likely that when she was in town she did stay there. Oh…reading more on the website it looks like the shop’s been named after Anna Held since the 30s. How interesting…I’ll bet that means she did stay there.

Here’s a picture of the original buildings and grounds. Just the shorter building in the front still stands, but it is still pink stucco like it always was.

A lot of those seem perfectly explicable to me.

#2 could be the aftermath of a birth at home. Most likely unplanned, since otherwise they’d have protected the mattress. I could see the womenfolk posing for a celebratory/holy shit picture with the wrecked mattress while mom & baby recuperate elsewhere.

A lot of them are clearly freakshow type pictures meant to emphasize height differences between remarkably-sized people.

Some seem to be Halloween pictures or deliberately humorous, like the soldier with a cat on his head. Google “funny pictures” and tell me some of that modern stuff isn’t more twisted!

Granted, many are truly bizarre. And #36 deserves its own SCP entry.

But man, goats on a slide? That is fucking awesome and of course I would take a picture of that!

Republican Congressman Forced to Resign

**Johnny **-- not sure you meant to put this in the “inexplicable photos” thread – if so, it needs a little more commentary. If not, where did you want it to go?

twickster, MPSIMS moderator

It was meant to go into the inexplicable photos thread. The photo is of a German soldier wearing a nightshirt/long undershirt, boots, helmet, and a cat on his head. As can be seen from other posts in that thread, there are captions being made up. The linked text is the caption, and the ‘quotes’ are jokes based on the caption.

To add more context: Rich Lott was running for congress when photographs of him appeared wearing a WWII German uniform as part of his hobby of re-enactment. Questions arose as to whether it was appropriate for a congressman to engage in an activity that some believe glorify a fascist regime, and he was defeated in the election.

Several Republican political figures who have been very vocal in their opposition to homosexuals have been caught engaging in homosexual activities.

So the image of a German soldier in a somewhat sexually provocative pose ties in with those somewhat topical events, and resulted in the caption for the photo.

My bad. Sorry, I’ll move it back.

Thanks, twiks.

Temperance was the first thing that popped into my mind.

The one that has me saying ‘WFTO?’ is #2.

Oh, how nice! I should e them and see if they have a copy of my book.

Voluptuous Panic: The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin. If you’re into early German porn, this is your book!
