Here’s a new CNN poll showing the Dems in two key states (Sinema in AZ, Bredesen in TN) ahead 50-43 and 50-45, respectively.
Odds still favor the GOP holding the Senate, but things aren’t moving their way.

Now, Universe, I know I haven’t been a very good pantheist. But if you could just give me this one sign…
Got that one on hotkey? ![]()
I’ve already had read the link you posted, Obama was aware of the interference and for whatever reason did basically nothing. The real reason nobody did anything was because Obama and every other country interferes with other countries election, hard to say do as I say not as I do.
We’re America. We say, “do as I say not as I do,” all the time. Are you new here? All. The. Time.
I’ve seen this particular “defense” of Russian collusion a few times, and it’s absolutely baffling to me. Yeah, we meddle in other countries’ elections. Russia’s just doing to us what we do to them. I’ll cheerfully stipulate that Russia is committing no moral flaw by trying to fuck with our elections. We still should do everything we can to stop them from doing it to us! If we were in a shooting war with somebody, and they started bombing our cities, would you respond, “Well, we’re bombing their cities, too. Really, you can’t expect the president to work too hard to stop our cities being bombed, when we’re bombing so many other cities. He’d be a hypocrite!”
Republicans are taking a huge risk by allowing Kavanaugh and his accuser to testify when they could simply scuttle the nomination and save an even more reprehensible nomination for next year. By allowing this spectacle to go forward, and by having a bunch of crusty, grey-haired, condescending, constipated old white men belittle a possible rape victim on live TV, they’re risking the entire senate, which is still very much in their hands - barring the unthinkable. But this might be the unthinkable.
I want this to be true. But I don’t believe it is.
I never said we should try to stop them, we should in fact try and stop anyone, including “friendly” countries from trying to “meddle”.
Your example of “Well, we’re bombing their cities too…” kind of makes my point about Obama, this happened on his watch. He should have done more. He should have shown the light of day on what Russia was doing, even if it meant embarrassing himself when he did so.
I think the Democrats are taking even a greater risk, an allegation of something that happened 30 years ago and something that Feinstein sat on after she reportedly knew about the allegation this summer. So why wait? Why wasn’t it brought when she knew about it? Remember it’s an allegation, not proven, from someone who doesn’t remember when the incident occurred. "Ford says she doesn’t remember many details of the event, such as how she got home, the exact year it took place, or how the gathering was put together."https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/9/16/17866988/brett-kavanaugh-christine-blasey-ford-washington-post
What do the democrats think they are going to accomplish with this. The time of guilty until proven innocent has long passed. “Can you prove you at sometime in the 1980’s didn’t try to rape her?” Isn’t going to hold water and make the Democrats look bad.
Yeah, I know what you mean. With the GOP in control of both houses, an incompetent and borderline-demented conman in the Oval Office, and the SCOTUS about to be packed with enough retrogrades to reverse a century of social legislation, the thought of the Democrats looking bad haunts me so. :dubious:
Dude, this is not a trial. If the question was whether we should put Kavanaugh in prison for his actions, then the answer is almost certainly no. Everyone has the right to their freedom, and that freedom can only be taken away under specific circumstances.
But Kavanaugh is not in jeopardy of life and limb. He’s not undergoing a trial. He’s not about to lose his freedom.
What’s happening is that we’re considering whether to confirm his appointment to the Supreme Court. And when we’re conducting a job interview of this sort we’re not bound by the same rules that we would be if we were conducting a procedure to determine if someone should be imprisoned.
It is perfectly permissible for a Senator to vote against Kavanaugh’s appointment simply because they don’t like the looks of him. They can vote against him or for him for any reason or no reason, and the only people they have to answer to are their constituents, aside from cases of bribery. They aren’t his judges, they’re trying to decide whether to put him on the Supreme Court or not.
But the “problem” is they are accusing him of attempted rape, in a public forum, with no proof, with an accuser, who doesn’t remember what year it happened, how she got to the party, how she got home, and according to the therapist notes she said there were 4 people involved. How can anyone answer that allegation? That falls way outside a “job” interview that’s getting really close to character assassination. No history, no proof, no way for him to prove he didn’t do it, given the information provided.
IMO it’s nothing more than a grandstand play to appease their base. Given how long they sat on the information. If this was really a big concern it should be been brought immediately waiting as long as they did tells me there is nothing there because if there was any evidence, they would have brought it up right away, instead of waiting.
But when the elections come up, it does give the Republicans something to point at, see the elite Democrats don’t CARE about justice, you’re guilty until you’re proven innocent the allegation itself is enough to show you’re guilty, no evidence needed.
Also why do you think the GOP is in charge? Maybe it’s because of actions like this.
Man, I get so confused.
I thought the GOP got votes because liberals say mean things about them. Now it’s because of fine points about the presumption of innocence and #MeToo overreach?
Well, hopefully, liberals will do the politically smart thing and just shut up, stop struggling and smile serenely when we disagree with what the party ‘in charge’ are doing. Let wingers be wingers, amirite?
It’s the only way to win, really.
How would it be an overreach when the GOP can point to this and say see the Dems think that an accusation means you’re guilty until you’re proven innocent. All they are doing to giving the GOP ammunition.
No they aren’t.
There’s a gigantic Kavanaugh thread right near by.
Reuters/Ipsos released six senate polls (five that matter plus CA).
There were results in there that both parties liked. The end result is that this didn’t have much effect on the 538 Senate Model (<- subject of this thread).
One thing I’ve heard about Florida is that excitement around Gillum could potentially help Nelson if people turn out who might not normally vote in a mid-term.
ETA: Oops, sorry. They actually talked about that in that article, so you know this already!
My apologies for contributing to the, uh, Kavanaugh sidetrack. (Mind you, a rejection or dropped nomination, if either occur, could have some effect on some of the Senate races, but that would certainly be difficult to quantify.)
