6.1 Earthquake this morning near Napa.

It woke me up in El Cerrito. The shaking wasn’t very strong here, but it seemed to go on for a long time.

Santa Rosa here. I was awake when it happened; a long rolling quake. Everything shaked and swayed and the lights flickered several times. There’s apparently been some damage to buildings and power outages.

Anyone killed or injured?

Completely slept through it here in Cupertino, but I’ve slept through my house’s fire alarm so I guess that doesn’t say much.

Agreed. The USGS lists the earthquake as 6.0. According to their web site, the frequency of 6.0 and greater earthquakes is 150 per year, so about three per week.

It woke my friends up in Mountain View. They are fine.

My friend said 3 killed and 70 injured in Napa area…this CNN article says 3 “critically injured” and over 90 other injuries. Don’t click the link tho…fuck their auto-play video and ads :-/

I’m not seeing any reports of fatalities in the local news; 3 critical injuries and less than 100 checking in for some type of medical attention.

Definitely some loss of wine, but most of the wineries are farther up the valley, where I’m not seeing any reports of damage.

Napa resident here. I live about three miles from the epicenter.

BIG FUCKING SHAKE! The missus and I yelled “earthquake!” at each other, then “kids!” and ran into their room as the house was jumping around. Pulled them out of bed as it died, rounded up the kittens and hung out in the back yard for a couple hours waiting for aftershocks.

Everything’s ok in the house, no house damage, just some stuff off the shelves. We got off easy. There were five aftershocks, but we couldn’t feel them, but one was a 3.6 we did feel. I feel like I have a hangover from the adrenaline.

Three critically injured, a bunch of historic buildings busted up downtown, no deaths.

To badly paraphrase Larry Niven: God was knocking, and he wanted in…BAD.

Absolutely nothing here in Auburn. My wife was awake reading and felt nothing. I was asleep, but I can sleep through anything anyway.

There’s an important moral lesson here:

Earthquakes are bad news.

I was awake (watching the FXX Simpsons marathon) so definitely felt it right away. It lasted long enough that I got under a door jam but wasn’t really worried. I’m in Oakland so about 32 miles from the epicenter in American Canyon. By comparison, I was over twice that distance from the Loma Prieta in '89 (about 75 miles away) and you could tell just by the feel of it that it was something much more serious and far scarier (at 6.9, it was almost 10x worse than last night’s).

What is the recommended response – getting under a doorjamb, or getting outside?

It depends where you are. If you in a city, with lots of tall buildings, stay inside. Falling glass and all that. Just sit down and enjoy the ride. The first sensation you’ll get is that you’re dizzy and falling, then you realize it’s an earthquake.

Best bet is to find a strong area away from windows and items that might fall. Typically a door jam or a hallway. If you’re sleeping, don’t get up and walk around bare footed. Broken glass etc.

The news reported that a liquor store in Napa had the contents of all of their bottles flowing out the front and the back doors when they arrived,

We didn’t feel it here east of Sacramento, I checked with my sisters in San Leandro and Castro Valley and they didn’t feel it either.

From the news report, the worst injury was a young child who was hit by falling bricks from a chimney.

Never, ever, ever run outside during an earthquake.

Apparently, the “stand in a doorway” advice is falling out of favor, as well.

Under a table or desk is what they teach now for earthquake preparedness in schools etc.

In Union City, I felt it moderately strongly, but it didn’t wake my wife up.

At work they train us to get in the Triangle Of Life, if we can’t get under a desk or table. I’m still used to thinking “doorway!!!” And it’s hard to break the habit so that’s what we did.

The “Triangle Of Life” is apparently not supported by any reputable experts.

Same. Although a lot of that was that there was nowhere nearby I could go from where I was that wasn’t at risk of something falling on it. I didn’t want to run in front of a bookcase and get squashed if it fell.

Berkeley and I was already half-awake when it hit - nice, long roll but no sharp movements. Set some light fixtures to swinging, but nothing off the shelves. But I did hear of a friend’s co-worker that had his studio apt in the Sonoma area thrashed when a toilet came off the wall :(.

Hope everyone here in the North Bay gets out with no or minimal damage.
