I know this has been done, but I’m sending out a big “WTF” to the universe - why is it 60 degrees F here in Carson City? I live in a high desert, which is to say, most of our precipitation comes in the form of snow. Normally, by this time of the year, we’re knee-deep or more in snow. Even if it hasn’t snowed in a while, it hasn’t gotten warm enough to melt the snow yet.
It’s downright balmy outside (for me - I like the 60 - 70 degree range). I left my jacket at home today. On the way back to work from lunch I had the urge to call in and go have a picnic. There’s a hint of a chill in the air if you get hit by a gust of wind (winds are topping out, according to weather.com, at about 22 mph), but it’s NICE outside.
If I look at the temperature map on weather.com, the Reno-Carson area has 60 degree weather, and everywhere in around us in a big ass circle is 55 and under. The farther you get from us, the colder it is - are we in the eye of the storm or something? It’s warmer here than in Vegas. Not by much, but it is.
I’m freaked out, namely, because I believe very much weather karma.
I’m stuck in work. Is anyone out there enjoying this unseasonable warmth?
I live in Northern NJ. We haven’t had any snow at all this winter so far. The high today was in the mid-50’s. I’m far too freaked to enjoy it. I wish the local weatherman would stop being so cheery when he gives such a bizarre forecast.
It’s 50ºF here in Boston. Yes, I guess this winter has been unseasonably mild for most places. Let’s not forget that New Mexico just had a blizzard.
The weather has gone screwy hasn’t it?
It’s beautiful here in Sasktatchewan today. I believe it was about 40 Fahrenheit (just over 3 Celsius) earlier this afternoon when I took my dog for a walk. I wore nothing more than a fleece, and though we have some snow here, it was melting in the streets. I clicked on the Environment Canada website prior to posting here and in the major centres in the provinces all the way from the west coast to Atlantic Canada are still above freezing except for Charlottetown and St. John’s.
It feels far more like a nice day towards the end of March than an early January day.
We’ve had one snow in my portion of NE Ohio - it was fairly significant at around 6 inches (at my apartment - less some places, more others).
I don’t know what the high was today, but it was likely near 60 - beautiful and sunny all day. Sure, I had to scrape my car this morning, but that’s nothing. I could handle the rest of the winter being like this - I don’t expect it, but I could handle it.
I wouldn’t start running around screaming wildly just yet. Yes, global warming is a problem, but if you look at the weather records they keep showing on the news, this is not, by far, the warmest December, or winter, we’ve had: they show warmer ones, in, say, 1951, 1879, 1895–I am making those particular years up, but this kind of weather is hardly unheard of. A litle Googling should provide exact years if you want.
if I recall, a year or two ago was the coldest on record here in the Northeast. So put the tranqulizers down, Neely.
Here in England, July 2006 was the hottest month ever recorded, since records began in 1659, by the mean of daily max and min temperatures. Similarly, September 2006 was the warmest ever September, the April-October period was the warmest ever, and the autumn (September-November) was also the warmest ever.
Overall, 2006 was just confirmed as the hottest ever year in the Central England Temperature series (the records which go back to 1659). Link.
Elsewhere, I read that Montreal is forecast to reach 16C on Saturday, against an average of around -5C, and an all-time January record of 10C!
Look at the temperature anomaly maps (bottom of page) for Europe and Canada.
I’m not worried about global warming at this point. I’m worried about weather karma - the fact that eventually all of this warm weather is going to give way and turn into a snow storm that dumps 75 feet of snow into my little valley.
Obviously, there is no scientific basis to this theory, but then again, neither does my theory that the Xbox 360 is some sort of mind control device, and you try prying someone away from one some day.
And I didn’t even get to enjoy the good weather. Damn these bills that have to be paid.
Fluctuations are all well and good, but Montreal above ten fricking Celsius in January is just wrong. Quebec City just had its first green Christmas in history.
This has moved out of the realm of the humorously unaccountable into the domain of the seriously fucked up. However, it looks as though people are starting to notice, and treat the environment as their top political priority.
I’m sure I saw green growing things with sizable broad leaves in gardens along Prince Edward Drive this morning. It’s a beautiful spring day out. twitch

Colorado and New Mexico seemed to have sucked all the winter weather into our borders and just won’t let it go. Although it is going to be in the 50’s today in Denver, it will start snowing again tonight and all day tomorrow, with another 6+ inches forecast.
If we do get 6" of snow, that will put us at around 50" for the season, or about 85% of normal. We still have all of January, February, and the snowiest months, March and April to go. If we just get normal snow totals for the rest of the season, we’ll end up with one of the top 5 snow seasons ever, and the biggest since 1972-73.
