6000+ Posts???

Just wondering… I notice some people here with 2000, 3000, and even some with well over 6000 posts. How many times a day do you come onto the boards? How many posts per day?

6000 seems to be A LOT. If you were a member for 4 years, then to get to 6000 posts you would need more than 4 posts a day EVERY DAY for FOUR YEARS to reach that number. (4.107 per day for 1461 days (counting one leap year))

I am not implying anything by phrasing it this way, honest. I am just curious… I would like to know how often you “high level” dopers check and respond to the boards or pose questions of your own.

Cheers!

Moderator’s Note: This is basically a poll, and therefore belongs in our IMHO forum, so I’ll move it there now.

You know if you click the profile button under someone’s post you can get their average number if posts per day right?

Just FYI, you can click the Profile button at the bottom of someone’s post, and on that page will be a “posts per day” average, if you don’t want to calculate it yourself.

lol

Your minds really going to blow up when you discover HANDY…

Look up his username, then check on the amount of posts he has…

I have ~8.5 posts per day, and I rarely post on weekends, so you can see how that can show what my behavior really is. My job does not require my constant attention, so I come here.

I try and make sure my posts all have content, but sometimes it is unavoidable that they are fillers (or corrections). I’d say around 1% of my posts are simple smilies, one-liners, or other posts that don’t strictly add anything.

I am a member of several other boards, but I rarely, rarely post to them at all. Now, someone like Guinastasia… she blows my mind. She’s quite active on at least two boards. I don’t think anyone minds  (plus, she likes Dr Pepper, so she can do whatever she wants in my book)

HANDY… almost 14000 posts… wow… what is your job? if it pays well enough I might need to change careers…

I was going for erislover’s type answers… though thanks for reminding me to check the profiles…

I should have phrased that better… but 14000 posts? Cecil only has 105 or so… I wonder if that says something

Were I a religious man, I’d say something about God’s messages being brief but profound.

But I’m not, so I won’t.

Therefore, Cecil’s messages are brief but profound.

OP: I posted 43 posts this past Sunday. Heh.

Guinistasia is in the lead though, with well over 11,000 post to her name.(yeah, I know it’s not a race, but you’ve gotta give it her)

I commend her (Salutes)

I’m approaching 4000. I come to the boards once per day, usually, and run through all the forums twice. I figure it breaks down to about two hours on the boards per day. It sounds like a long time, but I typically check my email and other sites during that time as well.

According to my profile I average 3.8 posts per day, but I don’t think it’s an accurate picture of my present posting habits. When I started here, I posted everywhere, to anyone, and accumulated a ton of silly posts. Now, I’m pretty quiet. I post to maybe one out of every ten threads I open. My interest has changed from posting everywhere, to simply reading others’ posts and then thinking about the subject at hand. And if there’s a conclusion to come to, I don’t post it. I’m happy keeping it to myself. Obviously, my post count isn’t that important to me, although I do like that it’s there.

How do you get a high post count? It just happens. You post an opinion here, a nitpick there, and it adds up. Most people have areas that they know a lot about, and you can count on them posting when the topic comes up. If it’s a topic that comes up frequently, their post count will reflect that. Some have hot buttons (Mac vs. PC debates, anyone?) that get pushed frequently. Others just like talking about books and movies, and since we have a whole forum dedicated to that, their post counts skyrocket. Flirting with someone helps (at least 100 of my posts have been the result of flirting) as does having an inquisitive mind. Keep that up for two years, and boom! You have 3000 posts to your name.

That said, having a high post count isn’t something you should aim for. My intention in writing that last paragraph was not for it to be a lesson in post count padding. When you post just to hear yourself talk and to add to your post count, it shows. Your posts should add to the discussion in some way.

IMO, those who care too much about their post count are missing the point of the board. We’re here to fight ignorance, to learn, to share, to support-- it’s not a competition for anything. Also, people tend to assume that big post count = respected or knowledgeable. It’s not always true. (I don’t mean to lecture. I just notice you used the phrase “high level”, and I wasn’t sure if you, like a lot of others, assumed that big post count = respected or knowledged. It don’t.)

handy is in the lead, Ryan. Guin is #2, I believe, or #3 (one of the mods is the other one).

One of the First ones eh? Well, I 'll give them a clap for their unexpected achievements…

“HANDY… almost 14000 posts… wow… what is your job? if it pays well enough I might need to change careers…”

I have been on the boards a long time & I make it part of my daily routine. Plus, but more important, everyone is equal on the board, I know what everyone is saying. In real life I might have to get an interpreter.

Some of the mods are getting pretty high post counts, but then they DON’T have to wait a minute to post again, like we do. I took a modship this year on another board & in only a few months racked up 8000 posts (Because I didnt’ have to wait a minute between posts) But that was probably about 5000 messages that said ‘how about reading the board before posting, your question is answered 5 times a day’.

We don’t? Why not? Is there some magical moderator aether-net that makes our computers use TCP/IP faster, and the hamsters to give the wheel an extra boost?

I think handy was referring to the time restriction that prevents hammering and (theoretically)double-posting, rather than the bandwidth. - Does the ‘1 minute before you post again’ apply to mods?

I believe that handy refers to the fact that software only allows one to post once every 60 seconds. He seems to think that this limitation does not apply to Mods but I have no idea if this is true or not.

Haj

I see. Well, no, but I don’t think anyone would even try to post twice in the same minute (except maybe handy.) It usually takes me that long just to type it in and check it for typographical errors.

I don’t double check what I’m writing after I type it in. Often times I write with my eyes closed, which is what I’m doing right now. Sometimes I’dll shake my head abkac had forht really hard while typeing and see what that does.

But normally I tone down my coffee intake.
