Curious if anyone on here listens to 6music, the BBC’s radio station for the more discerning music fan…
I listen quite a lot in the UK, but they are constantly being contacted by US listeners (presumably over the internet) who are always saying there is nothing like it in the US. (There isn’t much like it in the UK either).
Never knew about it before (though I have listened to some other BBC stations), but now I’ve had it on this afternoon I’ve really enjoyed it. The Scottish accent is my favorite and the Burns Unit guy has a nice one. Liking Christopher Eccleston’s choices a lot also. I’ll try this some more in the future, thanks for the heads up.
Apparently, most people in the UK hadn’t heard of it either, until they tried to close it down earlier in the year. There was enough of an outcry in the press that the listener figures more than doubled overnight.
There is quite a variety of different shows on there, if you have time to explore. The daytime stuff is good for background music, but the evening and weekend is where you get the really rare and varied stuff played. People like Guy Garvey and Cerys Matthews (lead singers with Elbow and Catatonia respectively) play a huge range of music, most of which I’ve never heard before, but thoroughly enjoy.
