'70s Krautrock

Love the stuff! So trippy. So hypnotic. Almost suggested these in the Oktoberfest thread, but I think they are looking for stuff that’s more oom-pah.

I used to use Tangerine Dream’s Stratosfear to time my morning abolutions.

I’ve got some '70s Krautrock for you! A big hit in '77.

It’s a trap!

I’ve mentioned them in previous threads but worth repeating. Get yourself some NEU!

Such asthis, this andthis.

I loves me some Krautrock.

If you like NEU! you should listen to Harmonia, which is the two guys from Cluster plus NEU!'s Michael Rother on guitar. Their second album, Deluxe, is my favourite.

My favourite’s always been Amon Duul II

Not a huge fan of the genre, but I did see Tangerine Dream’s show at Berkeley in 1988 that became the album “Rockface”. They had a full-blown laser show that was really cool, plus the added bonus of Andy Summers as the opening act.

99 LuftBallons.

Good choice for Amon Düül II–Wolf City is easily my favorite album of theirs. (Love the first three, too.)

My contributions: Faust…

…and Popol Vuh (who aren’t really Krautrock, but then neither are T. Dream).

When did it start being called “Krautrock?”

It started as a derisive term in the British rock press, and really took off after being co-opted by Faust when they used it as the title for the epically grating opening track from Faust IV (also the source of the two Faust tracks I linked to above).

Love the way she pronounces Very Very Wary Wary. Like that wascally wabbit.

one of the first Krautrock-bands (still active, although with some breaks) - Kraan

interestingly there is still quite a fan-base for Krautrock in Asia
here is a nice Can-Cover (Vitamin C) from the Korean Band 3rd line butterfly

When I saw your thread title I immediately thought of Kraftwerk’s Autobahn. I had an 8 track of it and loved it. I should see if it’s available on CD.

This might be of interest to you.

It is a BBC4 documentary on this very subject

It is one thing the BBC does very well, niche arts programs like this.

It is indeed. Unfortunately, the three albums that preceded it are not. I love the song “Autobahn” to death (long version, please), but my favorite Kraftwerk album is the third, Ralf und Florian, which is a wonderful bridge between the experimentalism of the first two albums and the cheerful pop of Autobahn et seq.

Their Autobahn album is the only thing I know about them. I don’t even remember exactly how I came into possession of that 8 track. I think it may have been a free gift from a record club (anyone remember those?).

Agreed. I was at this show, and it was a trip.

I’m a big fan of Neu! myself, as well as Krautrock-inspired bands like Stereolab or Cave. I just dig that driving motorik beat.
