aka a thinly veiled attempt to find some new music…
Currently the following are in heavy play wherever I go (home, work and the road)
Thee More Shallows - More Deep Cuts…one of the best unknown albums of 2005
Sigur Ros - Takk
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
Muse - Origin of symmetry
Royksopp - The Understanding
What’s playing on your cd-player/mp3/PSP/etc/etc???
The latest new albums I’m listening to are Eye to the Telescope by KT Tunstall and Hours by Funeral for a Friend.
Recently, though, I’ve been in the mood for comfort music and have been listening to a lot of the iTunes radio station Flashback Alternatives (“classic 80s alternative music”).
My husband and I went to see SFA live last week (a sort of post-honeymoon treat). They are undoubtedly one of the best live acts about at the moment, and, as always their set was superb. If you haven’t heard any of their stuff and the idea of psychedelic rock fused with electronic dance, made by a bunch of Welsh stoners with impeccable quality control appeals, I highly recommend them.
Also: Damien Rice- B Sides Gorillaz-Demon Days Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself Leadbelly - Midnight Special The Magic Numbers-The Magic Numbers
“In an Aeroplane over the Sea” is IMHO one of the greatest albums ever. I was hesitant about the new Sigur Ros (it being hailed as accessible and such - ewww) but I have to say I like the fact that the songs have become more ‘rocking’
If you like Neutral Milk Hotel (stupidest band name ever) you may like the Decemberists. Some people call them derivative of NMH, I call them vastly superior in every way.
Right now I have John Vanderslice’s Cellar Door in the cd player.
It’s a great albulm. A lot of the songs conjure up a mental movie they are so story driven and descriptive.
The tormented screams of the damned, because the heat in the institution got turned on, yet the sudden rise in outside temperatures to 87 degrees with 80% humidity didn’t make them turn the heat off.
I have been listening to my collection of 78 RPM records. Last week, I acquired a radio station turntable - a three-speed Technics SP-10 Mk II, with an SME tonearm. I put a Stanton 500AL cartridge in it, and ordered a 78 stylus on the net. And since Monday evening, I have been recording my 78s onto the computer properly, with the right equipment, for the first time, ever! It has always been among my dreams to own an awesome turntable for this purpose, and now I do!
There are records going back to 1908, up through the late 1950s. Some of them are the songs I’ve known the longest, others I haven’t played yet, as I bought them and haven’t had a machine to play them until now. I will be removing all the clicks and thumps from these recordings and making CDs of the results.
I guess this is the ceremonial last play for these records. After this, they will never need to be played again. But they’ll be preserved for all time, with all the noises removed.
Right at this moment…a country/folk duo called East Mountain South. Not my usual but I love it. Next in the queue is Jeff Buckley’s “Living Grace.” Cheers.
Lately I’ve been listening to anything I can find by this hilariously funny Canadian folk group called the Arrogant Worms. They’ve been around for a while and have quite a few albums out.
I’ve just watched Dave Matthews’ Live Central Park/Don’t Drink the Water performance, on big-screen with surround sound, up loud. I’m completely breathless, and not just from dancing insanely all over the room. That band is the ultimate!
I’ve just realized that I can no longer be held responsible for my actions when under the influence of that music. I’m going to have to dole out that particular cut to myself verrrry carefully.
Right now, I have Olga Tañón’s Una Nueva Mujer on constant repeat. Upbeat Puerto Rican pop music. Very, very listenable, and I’d like it even if I couldn’t understand it.
And just to toot my own horn a little, if you’re looking for something to listen to, you should check out the Essential Music Library Project. It’s still just getting started, so there’s a lot of ground left to cover. That link’ll take you to the thread I used to plan the project and now use for announcements–see the bottom for the latest links.
