Yeah… as the cameras closed in on Ryan Philippe, I was waiting for her to wrap up without thanking him. Unfortunately (for my comedic enjoyment), she remembered. I swear that he was getting noticeably nervous, though.
I think she meant it literally- June (who she had just called her “character”) was a real woman.
It is. I saw it in theatres (so much for that special-effects montage, when the last two of the last three movies I saw in theatres were a biopic and a documentary) with my parents over Thanksgiving, or maybe Christmas. The most amazing thing about it is that it really is Witherspoon and Phoenix singing, though I still prefer the actual recordings. They were good, don’t get me wrong, but I’m just not a fan of covers. I don’t think I’ll buy the DVD, but it’s definitely worth watching.
I haven’t seen Transamerica but Reese Witherspoon was terriffic in Walk the Line. It’s rare that I think all the acting awards are deserved but they have been this year.
Coming up next … montage of Oscar shows that ran ridiculously late.
That would be all 78.
Yeah, thank goodness it’s only a little after 8pm.
Best Adapted Screenplay:
Brokeback Mountain
It was, too.
Dustin Hoffman was a little off tonight.
Dustin Hoffman has taken Streep and Tomlin’s silly pills.
I predict…whoever wins screenplay will not win best picture. It’s like at the Tonys where something can win best book, music, orchestration, etc. while somebody else sneaks up and takes Best Musical.
…aaaaand…
Best Picture /= Brokeback Mountain.
OMG, when did Larry McMurty turn into the late Adolph Green?
Best Original Screenplay:
Crash
Wow. That’s awesome.
I’ve decided. Watching the Oscars demands a mute button for the speeches. And most of the songs.
Jeez this is getting boring. When the hell will someone go off on the Iraq War, or get all weepy and embarrassing?
Boring, boring, boring.
I am movie-addled again. Best ADAPTED screenplay. But he still looks like Adolph.
Oooh, now CRASH won’t win either. Quoting Brecht-- I love this guy’s speech.
Hmmm… they have to be getting close, right? Or are they going to throw a few more montages in to make it go beyond midnight?
Jon Stewart has been… meh. Tomlin & Streep and Ferrell & Carrell were the best introductions of the night (though Ben Stiller’s was great as well).
Let’s get to the end!
Mmm, actually Larry… and I feel odd telling you this since you like, adapted it and all, but Brokeback Mountain was actually a magazine short story and then a story in a book. It was never a book. (And what’s with Diane accepting for you? Does she also cut your meat for you or tell the waiters that “No… don’t bring him the curry, he can’t handle it”?
And OMG, Grant Heslov is that kid with the Jewfro and the great big Adam’s Apple who used to be in Spencer and a bunch of other teen shows! He got nominated for an Oscar!
Ang Lee is best director.
The news just cut off my Oscar show! Pretty insane. Fortunately, it’s showing simultaneously on another channel.
Best Director:
Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain
YES.
3:1 Ang is gonna spit on his hand before picking up the Oscar.
Ang Lee to his Oscar: “I wish I knew how to quit you.” Cliched but clever.
Since Jon Stewart mentioned it in his intro of Hanks, I don’t remember anyone here commenting on the skit involving how speeches will be kept short starring Tom Hanks. I thought that was good.
I was wondering when Jack was gonna make his appearance. Shoulda guessed it would be now. He sounds worse than usual.
Best movie:
CRASH
