Announced this morning.

I think this year I’ve seen more of the nominated films than in most recent years, at two (Brokeback Mountain and Capote). Of course I’m rooting for BBM to win everything, both because it’s a fantastic movie and because it’d be nice for a gay-themed picture to win big. Which makes Capote my second choice.

Wow, I don’t remember the reviews I read of Crash being particularly glowing at all. Surprising to see it get so many high-profile nominations.

I’m so thrilled for Amy Adams! Everyone should see Junebug just to see her character.

I’m beaming for George Clooney! 4 nominations, for 2 different movies!

And hooray for the Munich nominations! I was afraid it would be shut out.

I’m glad that King Kong got several nominations in the artistic categories (often mistakenly called the “technical” categories).

I’m ecstatic that Brokeback Mountain leads the nominations with 8!

My only major disappointment is the shut out of The New World.

Not counting Foreign-language, Documentary or the Shorts, I’ve seen all the movies except for North Country and Hustle & Flow. I think that’s my personal record. Usually the Music category trips me up, because sometimes songs are nominated from films I have no interest in.

I have to look at these closer when my adrenaline level goes down. I nearly went through the roof when they announced Amy Adams and Munich! (and that would have hurt)

Judi Dench could easily whip Keira Knightly and Charlize in a cage match.

Crash got a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s pretty good.

I was glad to see George Clooney get so many nominations, particularly his Best director nom for Good Night, and Good Luck. That was an exceptionally well crafted film.

I was alos glad to see Terrence Howard get a nod for Hustle and Flow. Sometimes they forget about movies that came out early in the year and Howard was mesmerizing in that film.

I was really surprised that Walk the Line did not get nominated for Best Picture. I suspect they felt they had to put Munich on the list but I’m not really sure it deserves to be there.

Of the major movies nominated, the only one I haven’t seen is Capote, but from the movies I have seen, I think Brokeback Mountain was the best and I think that Heath Ledger gave the best acting performance (in a strong field…all the Best Actor nominees are good).

I’d vote for Reese Witherspoon as Best Actress.

I was watching some commentary on Fox News this morning and they could barely contain their chagrin that so many “gay films” and “terrorist films” got nominated.

Of the Best Picture nominees, I really enjoyed Munich, Good Night, and Good Luck, and Capote, probably in that order. I didn’t see the other two.

I wonder if Paul Giamatti’s nomination was to make up for the Sideways and American Splendor snubs. Can anyone who’s seen Cinderella Man tell me how his performance was there?

Yay!! It’s officially Oscar season now!

I’m really happy for George Clooney…noms for writing, acting and directing!! Impressive.

Has anyone seen Hustle and Flow? Seems to me Terrence Howard has come from nowhere this year. Is he the next Samuel L. Jackson?

I’ll be rooting for Felicity Huffman ( FWIW, no, I do not watch Desperate Housewives) When’s the last time an actress won an Emmy and an Oscar in the same year??

I better get to the movie theater, I have seen NONE of these movies yet!

Gosh. I have seen practically none of those movies.

Except Match Point, which was great.

I took the nominations from the oscar.com web site, and moved the Picture and Director up to the top. I didn’t notice that the names of the Directors were absent from their list. Here they are.

ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING
Ang Lee - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Bennett Miller - CAPOTE
Paul Haggis - CRASH
George Clooney - GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK.
Steven Spielberg - MUNICH
I’ll also be rooting for Felicity Huffman. I’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, but I saw Transamerica, and she was astonishing! It’s not just a gimmick role either. She plays a man within days of a sex-change operation, so “he’s” been taking hormones, but still has some manly mannerisms. Huffman really makes you believe Bree is a man on the verge of becoming a woman physically. More than that, you come to really care about Bree, even though you want to smack her upside the head a few times. She’s a prude and very uptight, and thinks nothing of lying her ass off if it suits her. She always gets caught though. It’s a funny film, it is a comedy, but with several dramatic moments. It’s not a great film, but it’s a good one, and Bree is a great character. I think Reese will win, but I hope Huffman gets it.

I was definitely glad to see Howard for Hustle & Flow. Not only was that a great performance, but all of the other performances in that movie were excellent. I wish I could tell people “this is more than a movie about a pimp following his dream to rap about pimping” but I can’t. Still, I really liked it, and would recommend it even to people who don’t care about pimping or rapping. It has a lot of heart.

If PSH doesn’t win for Capote, someone’s getting punched.

I was glad to see a few nods to Cinderella Man. It was an early release, and was somewhat disappointing at the box office. I’m normally a Ron Howard Hata, but I really liked CM. Paul Giamatti was, of course, great. It got an editing nom, but I think it also could have received something in the cinematography/art direction/costume/make-up realms.

I thought it was just okay. It was a typically solid Giamati performance but nothing extraordinary - no real “Oscar moments.” I think all of the other nominees in his category gave stronger performances than he did (to be fair, they were better roles. Giamati was just Russell Crowe’s loyal friend and manager - not much to sink his teeth into).

It wouldn’t surprise me if he won, though, just because the voters might think he’s due for something. This is a category that I can’t really pick. I think Matt Dillon is a dark horse but the money is probably on Gyllenhaal…or maybe Clooney. Who knows?

Hey, my thread beat this one by one minute, and it has the nominations in the OP, but everyone’s posting in this one. Is it my breath?

It most certainly does, and it absolutely deserves o be there instead of Walk the Line, which had great performances, but was a fairly standard biopic. Walk the Line got the nominations it deserved.
Paul Giamatti’s nomination is deserved. He was very good (he always is), but I think he’s winning so many awards because of the earlier snubs. That’s not right. I love Paul, but I’ll be rooting for Jake or George.

Was pleased to see Terrence Howard as well. Hustle and Flow really was an underrated movie - it’s a gem. See it.

Kiera Knightley? Okay, so I haven’t seen the new adaptation of P&P, but this really raised my eyebrows. Almost like they threw her in because they couldn’t find anyone else but needed to round out the field. There’s too many other repeat Oscar winners in there; I think this category really comes down to Huffman and Witherspoon.

For the first time in years, I have seen not a single one of the movies nominated for any of the major categories. I had to scroll down to Wallace and Grommit before I recognized anything. Oh, well. At least I won’t stress over my favorites.

I actually liked Walk the Line more than Brokeback Mountain but I can see why the one was nominated over the other. Walk the Line is a lot like Ray which was only a year ago and it doesn’t have wicked awesome photography or anything. Nevertheless, it was great. But, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Pheonix were both really amazing - it’s a hard choice. I liked Reese Witherspoon as JCC also.

I have to see Capote. I am hearing great things about it and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I really liked Crash too. It seems like I saw that 100 years ago.
Sigh! There was a time I would go get caught up on my Oscar picks at this time of year and I would end up seeing every Best Picture nomination and each performance in all four categories. I was single and childless then. Those were the days.

When I saw the two threads, yours just said,

“Academy Award Nominations!”

whereas this one said,

“Acadedmy Award Nominations Are Out”.

. . . a little more informative. Yours could have meant anything. Academy award nominations. . .what?

And why the exclamation point? Sure, I’m interested, but am I so excited I want to jump in with a guy with an exclamation point? Next thing I know, you’re asking me to bring a dish to your Oscar party, and that ain’t my bag!!

I have seen three of the five and I am not really enthused about any of them.

This was one year where I was hoping for nominations from films I had already seen (Capote, GN/GL, and Munich) so I didn’t have to go out and see a lot of films to keep my “See them all before the awards” streak alive.

Now, all I need to do is rent Crash and go see Brokeback.

One trip to the theater. Not bad.

My vote on the main categories:

Picture:
Sight unseen, I’ll go with Brokeback. The three I’ve seen are all decent, but unexceptional, films.

Actor:
Hoffman. I need to see Ledger, but Hoffman was fantastic. Capote was not that great a film, but his performance pushed it into the Best Picture category. Straithern was great as well.

Actress:
Witherspoon. I think her performance was the only I’ve seen, but she was amazing. I think it is between her and Huffman.

S. Actor:
Clooney. I have only seen Giamatti, he was good but not great, but I like Clooney, so it is a homer pick.

S. Actress:
No idea. A bad year for female roles. I liked Keener in Capote well enough, so she gets my default vote.

Directing:
From the clips, Ang Lee’s Brokeback looks well made. And the subject matter is tricky. He gets my vote.

A pretty watered down year for Oscar.

Ah well, I thought the Subject Line worked. A quick mouseover would have revealed that the actual nominations were in the post.

And to me it did deserve an exclamation point. I’m a movie buff. I’ve seen all the nominated films in every category but Foreign, Documentary and the Shorts, except for Hustle & Flow and North Country. Most of my favorites from last year are represented in one way or another, which very rarely happens. So, I’m a dork. Still, an excited dork. AMY ADAMS! MUNICH! CLOONEY! Brokeback leading the noms with 8! Wow. These things make me a very happy dork.
