Academy Award nominations are out

I can’t wait to see the Oscar night performance of “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” which was nominated for Best Song from Hustle and Flow. I think it will be awesome to see the cheesey dancers while somebody like Josh Grabin is singing words like, “Because a whole lot of bitches talkin’ shit” and “Niggas hatin’ on me cuz I got ho’s on the tray.” That’s good TV.

Look, I’m obviously just more popular than you.

Perhaps as performed by Robin Williams, no doubt with all the verve he brought to “Blame Canada.”

Meaningless.

The Academy Awards are nothing but a glorified circle jerk between overpaid and overego-inflated individuals congratulating themselves on another year of producing crap for the masses.

Ah, spoken like a true right-winger. If your side made good movies, maybe your ilk would get some nominations too. And then you’d think very highly of the Oscars.
Otto, I bow to you. My only hassle/complaint was having to go to a different page for the nominations, not that my thread was practically ignored.

Hear hear.

Wh-wh-what? Why, I’ve never heard such a thing! Surely, the Oscars are more significant and evenhanded than the Nobels! I’m so glad to have my eyes opened! Thank you, citizen!

I too look forward to the performance of the Hustle and Flow song. And I have seen almost none of the nominated films. We’ve had no luch getting to the movies these past few months. I want to see most of them. Many of them are still playing, aren’t they?

Where Where? I know movies about tolerance, justice and peace really make you folks foam at the mouth, but the more you bitch about these nominations, the sillier you’ll look (if that’s possible).

I want to extend my warmest personal thanks to both Clothahump and Absolute for taking the time out of their obviously packed-to-the-rafters lives to come into this thread for the sole purpose of expressing their opinion on how big of a waste of time coming into this thread is.

Equipoise, I reported your thread in the hope of having it merged with this one. I’m sure they’ll do it, because I’m just that darn popular.

For anyone that’s interested, here is a fascinating interview with all five of the directors. It’s a fun read, although I’m only halfway through it so far.

You’re comparing the Nobel prizes to the freaking Oscars? Most people on the planet owe their life to the scientists who the Nobel prizes honor. They sure as hell are more significant than celebrating the best two-hour diversions of the year.

You can call the Nobels a glorified circle jerk if you want, but scientists (by and large), are not overpaid, not ego-inflated, and do not deliver crap to the masses.

Are you implying that anyone who dislikes the ridiculous number of self-congratulatory media award shows is an intolerant, racist, homophobic right-winger? What does that have to do with anything? Just because Brokeback Mountain is a candidate this year? I have no problems with that movie.

I can’t speak for Clothahump, but my dislike of the Oscars is not at all political.

I never intended to hijack your thread - if you would like to continue this discussion, let’s do it in the Pit.

Whoooooooosssssshhhhhhh

Wow, this year I have actually seen all the Best Picture Nominees and IMO Crash is the weakest. I really don’t see what is the pointo f choosing, but if I had to I would rank them myself as:

  1. Good Night and Good Luck
  2. Capote
  3. Munich
  4. Brokeback Mountain
  5. Crash

Personally I would’ve given Cinderella Man a nod over Crash.

There was this guy in Good Night and Good Luck who, although he never directly interacted with the other characters (he appeared on films the others watched), put on an absolutely amazing and chilling performance as an anti-dommunist demagogue. He got robbed of the Best Supporting actor nod.

I admit, I sometimes wonder about the worth of the Oscars myself. Art isn’t competitive. And can we really say that Brokeback Mountain was better than, say, King Kong when they were about such different things? Hell, I’d even say Brokeback and GN&GL had such different goals and techniques that they shouldn’t necessarily be compared side to side.

That said, it’s still fun to argue which was the “best”. I’ve yet to see most of the nominated for best picture, but I adored GN&GL, so I’m rooting for that. Given that it’s a completely arbitrary and subjective standard, what do you think should ahve been nominated, Clothahump and Absolute?

Can we get a woosh over here?

Susan

It seems that it would be really easy to pick the actor and director winners, based on the SAG and DGA results – since it’s the same people voting (actors voting for actors for the Oscars; presumably those same actors are members of SAG…ditto for the DGA/director).

Which means it should be Witherspoon, PSH, Weisz, Giamatti and Ang Lee. I think all but Giamatti also won Golden Globes, so I don’t think there’s going to be very much drama on Oscar Night.

Oops. Oh dear. Heh…crap.

Apologies, cbawlmer. I had a vague sense that perhaps I had not properly parsed your sentence, but…

** crawls away and hides in embarassment **

I thought he was a bit hammy, myself.

Mr. beckwall and I make predictions before they announce the nominations, then see who had the most correct. Out of the 6 main categories, I had 24 correct and he had a mere 19. I am the WHIZ!!

Crash could be a sleeper. I sat in my car and wept for 10 minutes after seeing that film. It was subtly in your face, if that’s possible. Didn’t tell us how to think, just let us know what’s really going on in LA and possibly the whole world. I was disappointed but not surprised that Walk the Line didn’t get a best movie nod. Many of the reviews for Munich were average, but I guess now I’ll go see it just cuz it got nominated.

<puts on demeanor of Oliver Twist at breakfast>

please, Academy–could Harry Potter win?

Please?

the rest is all mildly interesting–although I am definetly tuning in to watch Stewart!. Haven’t seen many of these movies, except HP, Narnia, Wallace and Grommit–yes, I have kids at home? Is it obvious?

Equipoise, KEEP SNIDE POLITICAL COMMENTS AND PERSONAL INSULTS OUT OF THIS FORUM. Yes, I know that all caps is yelling, I am a Moderator and I am yelling.

Clothahump’s comments are not political, but are made by many who disdain Hollywood’s overindulgences. Your response is out of line.

We clear on this?

And I will merge the two threads. It is not uncommon, if there are two threads on a subject, one gets a comment (for whatever reasons) and others see two threads and so add their comments to the one that already has a comment. I mean, c’mon, you see two threads on the same topic, one has 3 responses and one have 0, which one do you post to? It’s not a personal insult, it’s random chance as often as not.

In any case, I’ll merge 'em.
