78th Oscars Thread (unboxed spoilers)

Maybe his father is gay? Oh. Wait…

You write it. We’ll get Johnny L.A. to film it. Need to get someone to direct. Can I be like a fourth producer or something?

Jon Stewart was disappointing, I hate to say. I had high hopes for him but he didn’t do it for me. Maybe next year they’ll have Steven Colbert as host and some truthiness in the Best Picture award.

Totally ditto.

It seemed to want to make the point “racism is bad, complicated, exists on many levels and nobody is completely free of it, but working together we can overcome it”. Hell, The Defiant Ones got there a half century ago.
So, the homo-haul: PSH for Best Actor, McMurtry/Diana and Ang Lee for BB. Three awards for straight people on gay themed films, still not bad. (Oh, and George Clooney… so four.)

Well, one cut-off person with the speeches and it hadda be best picture?

Having had distilled moviegoing these past ten days, I can say that while all the movies were great, there were two movies that really surprised and engaged me–MUNICH and CRASH. GNGL was too self-congratulary and BM slowed down like a crippled sheep going uphill in its second act. CAPOTE had the best performance evah but the rest of the movie (except for Catherine Keener and the cinematography) was not as perfect.

Oooh, come ON, Jon, “drive home safely”? Why didn’t you just tell us to try the veal and tip our waitress?

Eve can make the costumes, Otto can do the lighting and we can put on the movie right here in this old barn!

Hmmm, the whole thing really petered out there towards the end. Crash doesn’t seem too bad a choice for Best Picture, but then I only saw two of thenominated films.

Stewart was not entirely horrible as emcee; hope he does it again.

Actually that would have been cuter.

Heck, it was more fun commenting and reading the comments on this “live” Academay Awards thread than it was watching the actual show.
Yeah the SDMB is a fun group of folks.

Good Night … and Good Luck.

You think this was good, wait until the 2008 Presidential Debates. Or look up the threads from 2004.

Amen to that. Rubystreak signing off for the night. Thanks guys!

I’m just so p.o.d that they didn’t give the award to GN&GL or Brokeback

Somebody go to YellowPages.com and get me the address of the nearest Danish Embassy and an Explosives Wholesale House. Somebody’s gonna pay for this!

The Academy goes for Crash over Brokeback Mountain?

Looks like Hollywood isn’t quite ready yet to recognize a romance between two men. Closed-minded bigots!

I think Tom Cruise must’ve spent a lot of time campaigning.

When JOn Stewart signed off , it sounded like there were only two people left in the theater to respond.

Or they recognize quality films without considering their “sexuality” and decided Crash was better than Brokeback Mountain, which is a fair argument in my humble opinion.

I’m dumbfounded that so many people think Brokeback is Oscar worthy. I agree that Crash was contrived and painfully obvious, but so was Brokeback. Take away the “significance” and Brokback is just another cloying love story. Frankly it’s just like Crash, except with socially important dialogue inducing mores about homosexuality instead of racism. It’s basically the ACLU wheel-of-fortune.

Well, I haven’t even seen *Brokeback Mountain * yet, but I’d be stunned if there were two movies as bad as Crash up for Best Picture. It has to be better!

w00t!

Holy Shit!

Too fucking weird.

Three-Six Mafia just won an Oscar.

Y’all have no idea how truly surreal that is.

To be fair, I didn’t see any of them. Not interested in a love story, so never saw Brokeback Mountain. Munich struck me from trailers and reviews as Spielberg trolling for Oscars. Not sure I ever heard of Crash. Have some interest in Good Night and Good Luck, but I’ll probably just give it a rental later. Never really heard much about Capote either, and by now it’ll be a rental.
