Not even me- and I work there.
Yes, it might end with fewer dead people. I think that’s a positive outcome, although apparently some folks would disagree with me.
According to Wikipedia, there are actually quite a few Jamaicas in the US:
- Jamaica, Georgia
- Jamaica, Illinois
- Jamaica, Iowa
- Jamaica, Queens, New York
- Jamaica, Vermont
- Jamaica, Virginia
Turns out there are a bunch of Venices in the US, too:
- Venice, Bainbridge Island, Washington, a community of Bainbridge Island
- Venice, Florida, a city in Sarasota County
- Venice, Illinois, a city in Madison County
- Venice, Los Angeles, a neighborhood on the Westside of the city, California
- Venice, Louisiana, an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Plaquemines Parish
- Venice, Missouri, an unincorporated community
- Venice, Nebraska, a census-designated place in Douglas County
- Venice, New York, a town in Cayuga County
- Venice, Ohio, former name of Ross, a census-designated place in Butler County
- Venice, Utah, an unincorporated community in Sevier County
When I read the OP, I immediately assumed Venice, Italy, and didn’t think otherwise until Chronos questioned the LAFD reference.
For me, it wasn’t just that I’ve never heard of Venice Beach referred to as just Venice; it was also that the OP used the term “master tenant”, making me think that the OP wasn’t a native American English speaker, since that’s a term I’m unfamiliar with.
I grew up in Queens, so if someone mentioned a party in Jamaica, especially a friend of mine, I would assume Queens. But, have people in Ohio or California or whatever even heard of Jamaica, Queens?
I assumed it was LA as well, if only because when I read it, the voice in my head didn’t have an outrageous Italian accent.
Call the cops and tell them there is an active covid case at the site of the illegal party. The master tenant is filth, IMHO.
I assumed it was Venice, CA, not just because I’m in LA County, so Venice is local and comes to mind. It is also because guess what county has had well publicized issues with for-profit “parties” being held at rented (or just appropriated) mansions during the pandemic?
Plus, of the Venices listed above, I would guess that the one in California is the second most famous, just from the beach’s ubiquitous use in films and television.
OP - props to you for working so hard on this. I’m glad you’re getting out of the house soon.
No. However, I’m guilty of regularly referring to Old Orchard Beach, Maine as “Old Orchard” so I understand OP’s impulse to shorten it.
LOL. Google “Venice world famous tourist destination” and the first 20 pages of results are about Venice, Italy. Which sort of proves the point that if someone mentions Venice, the vast majority of people will think “Italy” unless they’re somehow connected to the neighborhood in LA with about 40k people in it.
You mean the place with 40K people that attracts tourists from around the world? Like the NHK video I posted Venice is a premier tourism destination.
https://venicechamber.net/visitors/about-venice/
Venice Beach is the 2nd-largest tourist attraction in Southern California after Disneyland
There were 10 million visitors in 2015; the largest proportion of visitors were between the ages of 25 and 34.
62% of visitors have an average income over $50,000
43.8% of visitors are from areas outside of Los Angeles County and Southern California
The first documented surfing demonstration in California was held off Venice Beach by George Freeth in 1907.
Venice is the birthplace of modern progressive skateboarding, as celebrated in the documentary film “Dogtown and Z-Boys” and Sony Pictures’ “The Lords of Dogtown.”
With the Pacific Ocean, Boardwalk vendors, skaters, surfers, artists, and musicians, Venice is known throughout the world as a setting for films such as “Speed” with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, “Breathless” with Richard Gere, “White Men Can’t Jump,” and “L.A. Story.”
Venice High School celebrated its Centennial in 2011.
In 2012, GQ Magazine defined Abbot Kinney Boulevard as, “the coolest block in America.”
The iconic Venice Sign is regularly seen on national television shows and commercials, and has provided the backdrop for events such as the 50th anniversary of the Doors, and the Rams return to Los Angeles.
Venice Sign Lighting events have featured luminaries such as Robert Downey Jr., Anjelica Huston, and P!nk, as guest sign lighters.
Windward Plaza and the historic Venice Business District have become destination venues for broadcast events such as Ninja Warrior Competition, Tommy Hilfiger’s spring runway show, and Kevin Hart’s Nike Club Run for charity.
Nobody is saying Venice isn’t a tourist destination. But if the context isn’t clearly about the neighborhood in LA (and the OP wasn’t) ,the fact that someone who lives in the area and/or knows that there has been a problem with for-profit parties knew the OP was about a neighborhood in LA doesn’t mean that people on the other side of the country (or the world) will think you’re talking about the neighborhood in LA rather than the city in Ita!y.
Thats fair enough. It is a little weird that anyone who watches tv or sees movies even semi-regularly has seen this tiny neighborhood dozens of times even if they arent aware of it.
actually, pay for entry at the door for parties have been illegal in la county for almost a decade due to gang related
ive been to the la venice dozens of times … but I’ve never done the boat thing …
And finally, the entry for “Venice” on Wikipedia is about the place in Italy. The much shorter entry for that other place is named “Venice, Los Angeles.”
As to the OP, yeah, tell the authorities.
To further clairify that the Venice in question is in Los Angeles (or that Jamaica is in New York, for that matter, and yes, this Californian has heard of it), we must further clarify which of the many Los Angeleses we’re talking about.
Texas
- Los Angeles, Willacy County, Texas, a census-designated place
- Los Angeles, La Salle County, Texas, an unincorporated community
Other countries
- Los Ángeles, Catamarca, in Argentina
- Los Ángeles, Chile, the capital of the Chilean province of Bío Bío
- Bahía de los Ángeles a bay located along the east side of the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico
- Los Ángeles, South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, in Nicaragua
- Los Angeles, Bohol, a barangay in the Philippines

- Los Ángeles, Los Santos, a corregimiento in Panama
- Cerro de los Ángeles, a hill in central Spain
- Los Ángeles, a neighborhood in Madrid, Spain
- Los Ángeles, a district in the canton of San Ramón, Costa Rica
Obligatory XKCD reference.
I thought there were only 2 Lancasters in America as a kid . one year I got an atlas for Christmas and found there were 14 …
Now I want to know more about the ‘spiritual mansion’ that anti-vaxxers and drug addicts call home. Sounds fascinating.
ETA- I knew you meant Venice Beach. Italy didn’t cross my mind, for some reason.
@edwin_klockars - Well, what happened? Did you move out? Did you live to tell about it? Did the big super-spreader party ever happen? How many people OD’d there? Did the police bust them? Did the LA Times cover it? Inquiring Dopers want to know!
BTW: In the San Francisco Bay Area alone, we have:
- Richmond
- Albany
- Kensington
- Concord
- Newark
- Dublin
- Saratoga
- Antioch
And, did you know that there is no world-famous bridge in the San Francisco area called the “Golden Gate”?
