There are rumors floating around that there will be a Dopers meeting at some point at some time. The thing is no one can seem to come to a decision as to where and when to gather.
Here’s my proposal:
Las Vegas
Late August to early September
I am willing to check out hotels and such as my father has “connections” there. In fact, he is headed there this week, I could have him talk to the people at the hotel he frequents to find out more information.
So here’s my deal.
I will do some groundwork for this but I would like some input on dates etc.
I would have suggested Chicago but Vegas has so much to do and a lot of it includes kids. Those of you with kids, Vegas has become very kid friendly. Flights are not that expensive and I can narrow it down to one hotel, I am sure we can work out a discount rate for us.
OH, and if we can talk Cecil and his crew to join us, it would be more fun.

If this pans out and the hotel I am thinking of is willing to work with us, we probably could weasal a large room for a cocktail party with a buffet.
If we get a good response I will set up a “committee” to handle certain tasks. It would be wasteful to allow it to become a bumbled event. With 6000+ members I would imagine that at least 500 have the ability to show up…okay maybe 300…but it should be more!

Hey that sounds great Techie. I’d love to go to Vegas. Around Labor Day would be a great time, it’s a long weekend for most people. I say we go for it guys.
So this will be a kid (young adult) friendly gathering? I’d like to go to the regional one in Chicago (It’s MUCH closer), but it sounds like all they’re going to do is go to bars, and I’m only 16.
Count me in! Living in L.A., Vegas is close enough for me to drive (and I’d even be willing to carpool with other L.A. Dopers). Labor Day weekend is ideal. And I can use my former smoking money to finance the hotel expense - Woo Hoo!!
Add me as a “tentative.” I doubt I’ll be bringing the kids, but it sounds like a whole lot of fun for me and my husband! Besides, I want to meet Shayna!
Techie, I’d love to go. I’m sure Mr Twylight and I can work something out for that weekend, especially since my birthday falls on Labor Day this year. That could be his present to me

A time to meet at a specific place in the hotel. Find a restaurant or two to invade.
Saturday morning, nurse some hangovers with some bloody mary’s and coffee.
Saturday day, a free for all, do what you wanna.
Saturday night, an early cocktail party with buffet – casual attire. Reserve the place for a great majority of the night so people can come and go as they please. Hey I have to gamble.
Sunday Day, possibly a trip to the lake for those that wanna go. I forget the name of it, but in September it’s still pretty warm. Those that rather stay and gamble are excused
Sunday morning, brunch, yes a late brunch again with bloody mary’s and lots of food.
Sunday night – possibly a show? Depends on what is available and what can be booked. I will work with a travel agent on that.
Monday, get your tired asses home…I might even stay for another day HAHAHAHA

Chicago is close for me, but don’t limit it. Las Vegas is huge fun–and no, I’m not a gambler–and very reasonable, given that it’s a tourist trap anyway. Work the options, and it’s actually very “doable”. It’s a matter of intelligent logistics: there are cheap lodgings and anyone who can’t find budget eats and fun just needs the applied gimlet eye of Dopers.
Chicago, Vegas, Mempis, Kansas City…it’s a matter of logistics. All we need to do is decide the place and ruthlessly employ the collective intelligence to minimize cost and maximize fun.
I’ll tell you what, if it’s at all possible, from a logistical standpoint, I will most certainly be there.
I still remember all the cool places to go from having lived there. All the $8 all the beer you can drink bars, too.
I would offer my services as a roommate to anyone, but I snore. And fart in my sleep. I’m sure you wouldn’t mind letting me have my solitude, thank you.
Veb, the reason I pick Vegas is the variety of things that we can do.
I realize that for East Coasters it’s a longer flight, but most of the flights to Vegas are so cheap.
Chicago seems like an obvious place but for out of towners, we would be lost, with Vegas there is something there for everyone. You can’t be bored in a city like Vegas.
That’s my thinking.
Denver is just as interesting as Chicago but again, Vegas has a lot to offer where no one will be bored or left out.
That’s why I stepped up to the plate and picked it.
I’d love to come, especially if I could road trip with some of the other Bay Area Dopers, but I don’t know right now. I’m going to Ohio on August 17, and am not sure if I could really finance two trips so near each other. Keep me posted, it sounds like fun.
I’ll put it in for consideration. Vegas. Never been there. Not much for gambling, but then with a bunch of dopers around, surely there will be someone else who would rather just talk. Or go see a show. Or gawk at the showgirls.
One comment techchick - not to rain on the parade, but I think you highly overestimate the active population of the SD. While the membership list is over 6000, check out the thread on an interesting feature that allows you to track each member by ID number in sequence of registration. Several people have listed blocks of posters who joined with them, and the active poster percentage appears to be rather small. 500 is probably way too high. I figure if you add the totals of the local groups, and account for cross-pollination, you will come close to an expected total.
