80-year-old Japanese man becomes oldest to climb Mount Everest

"An 80-year-old Japanese man on Thursday became the oldest man to reach the top of Mt. Everest, officials said.

Yuichiro Miura reached the top of Everest Thursday morning with his physician son Gota, mountaineering official Gyanendra Shrestha said from the base of Everest.

Miura’s achievement eclipses that of a Nepali man who climbed Everest at age 76 in 2008."

Pretty impressive. According to the article he broke his hip two years ago, and had heart surgery last January. He’s summitted Everest twice before, when he was 70 and 75.

Everest - it’s just a box on a bucket list at this point. Sigh.

More power to this fella - a great personal achievement. But I wouldn’t go near Everest if I had a jones for climbing - I would get claustrophobic from the crowds.

Man, I wouldn’t mind being like him when I grow up!

Not his first time there: He was a daredevil speed skier who skied down Everest’s South Col in 1970, using a parachute to brake his descent. The feat was captured in the Oscar-winning 1975 documentary, “The Man Who Skied Down Everest.” He also summited it 10 years ago.

I’m waiting for the installation of the escalator.

But possibly not for long.

The other man is Min Bahadur Sherchan, now 81. He is apparently on the mountain. If things go well he may reach the summit in a week or so.

Now I’m imagining a bunch of 80-something record-holding men going all Tonya Harding and trying to kneecap the next old guys to come along and try for their record.
