People say that Hollywood loves movies about Hollywood, and I’m sure that’s true, but as far as I can tell very few Best Pictures are actually about the movies. Maybe “The Artist” from last year. But before that the previous Best Picture winner that was about the movies was “All About Eve”, back in 1950, from what I can tell.

It is also worth noting that until “Crash,” no Best Picture winner had ever been a story set in Los Angeles.

I immediately thought of Singin’ in the Rain, but when I looked it up, I was surprised to learn that it wasn’t even nominated for BP. Only two nominations, Supporting Actress and Scoring, and it won neither.

Million Dollar Baby was set in Los Angeles. It won Best Picture the year before Crash (and was written by Crash writer/director Paul Haggis)

Ummm…wasn’t Rain Man (Best Picture - 1988) set in Los Angeles?

^Partially. The very beginning and the last part of it was. The bulk of the movie was the road trip on the way to L.A.
