Could have done without Midler and that sappy song.

did they just cut bette off mid sentence?

yep.

Someone from The Hollywood Reporter who’s there said that during the commercial people were instructed not to clap during the memorial video, so they didn’t just mute the audience.

huh.

I think I like it that they’ve gone to holding applause until the end. The way they used to do it, they’d have a round of applause for the big names, but almost nothing for the lesser-knowns and behind-the-scenes folks. Basically, it was the equivalent of asking, “Who?” Which couldn’t have been very easy for the family and friends of those particular deceased.

I also agree that it should have stayed as it was, without the song at the end.

No Ralph Waite in the memorial. I know he did a couple movies, but I guess he was mostly TV and he will be on the Emmy memorial.

GOOOOD LOOOOOORD what is holding Goldie Hawn together?!

Aw, why not have Idina Menzel do “Let It Go?”

I know Travolta butchered the hell out of her name, but isn’t that her?

I thought he said “Adele somebody.” I could be wrong.

ETA: Okay, Ellen fixed the mistake. My bad. I’m not used enough to seeing Idina in person to have recognized her easily.

He didn’t even try to correct himself.

Sutures

I thought Goldie looked amazing, as did Bette Midler.

And I like that song, dammit! It’s a perfect memorial song.

It is. I don’t even know what Travolta thought he was trying to say, but it sounded nothing like Idina Menzel.

I like [this Africanized version](Alex Boyé) of “Let It Go” by Alex Boyé (with Lexi Walker singing) best.

I was just thinking to myself, as they had that lovely Somewhere In Time instrumental music playing, how nice it was not to have a singer singing and drawing focus from the people of the In Memoriam segment. In some Oscar shows past, they actually did that, with the director cutting in shots of the singer and really shortchanging the deceased folks. I hated that every time.

So, yeah, this was great! Wait, what? They added in a vocal performance afterwards? To a show that already always runs long? What the …?

Not to mention the lyrics of “Wind Beneath My Wings” doesn’t really fit for Hollywood-star-performer types. “It must have hard for you in my shadow”? Riiiiiight.

Man, I am LOVING the entrance themes this year. “This is Berk” from How to Train Your Dragon? AWESOME.

Best Original Song, I think, has to go to “Happy”. It’s just pure fun.

Good choice on Gravity for original score.

another one for gravity.
