You’re damn right about that! Well with all the 20/20 specials and post whoring about the topic, how could I forget? I may sound like a real ass about this, but I’m not saying we shouldn’t recognize it or something, but does every goddamn network and their brother have to air a three year aniversay on the topic? Yes, I feel for those who lost their lives in the matter, it was and still is a horrible thing. And for crying out loud, no shit I won’t forget! STOP REMINDING ME!
It’s all about increasing advertising revenue.
I walked by ground zero on my way to work today, and judging from the newsvans, street vendors (selling twin tower hats), and Japanese tourists with video cameras, those 3,000 are spinning in their graves.
Sadly, it says a lot about this country, or humanity, whichever.
I guess I’ll cut this one some (just a bit) of slack since it remains a relatively fresh event, it was extremely shocking and traumatic for many, and, to be perfectly honest, because I can ignore the coverage and watch the Astros beat up on Pittsburgh if I want.
If what I really want is to have a depressing wallow over the 9/11/2001 attacks on the WTC and Pentagon, and I most assuredly do not, I can slip into the VCR the tape I made of that day’s live coverage, picking up from about 9:30AM.
I can’t think of anything America should be more proud of than its entrepreneural spirit. If what the bastards who did the deed have done is make Americans richer, then I laugh at the bastards.
That’s what I hate about what the networks are doing. Pulling specials out of their ass just to pick up a cool million in advertising.
The other part of my mini-rant was the post whoring about it. Debating, and talking about the terrorists I’m fine with. The posts that drive me nuts are the ones that go into this warm, heartfelt story about what happened to them on “the day”. And then it ends with, “I, ParentalAdvisory, …ate a hotdog on 9/11.” It just seems, cheesy, and a bit tacky. Sorry.
I know some of you are thinking, all I have to do is not click on those threads. But I feel like I’m being spammed by every messageboard there is during this time of year. And not only that, when I do go to read them, all I see is the Redneck Response which consists of, “Just blow them up!”, “Kill those Arab bastards!” (not on this board obviously), and “GOD BLESS AMERIACA!!!11”. I don’t know what I hate more, the responses, or the 9/11 threads?
Why do you hate America so much?
(kidding!)
I wonder who is laughing louder. If a few enterprising Americans get rich in the wake of 3,000 dead Americans, I think that is a trade-off the terrorists can deal with.
Except by you, just now.
I know, I’m such a hater!
So, 3,000 dead Americans and an event that will be traced back to the moment this country jumped the shark vs. a few street vendors making some bucks from selling NYFD hats.
I think the only reason you’re laughing is because you must be nuts.
Oh yes we will. It may not seem like it now, but we have short memeories for catastrophy. Ask any American on the street if they remember the Maine, and most will give you quizzical look and say, “the main what??”. A hundred years from now, long after the Freedom Tower has been recycled into razor blades, no one will recall the World Trade Center, unless you are talking about the one in the economic hub of the world, Shanghai.
Exactly why they should leave it the hell alone and not replay the video of the burning buildings every damn year.
I just lit into someone at work who thought that was a good idea as she played one of the videos on VHS on a TV set in the hall. She said something about it being such a great ‘rememberance of those who died.’ and I said ‘Yup, watching a few friends die over and over again is a really wonderful thing.’
It never fucking occurred to her that maybe those left behind don’t want to wach their loved ones die over and over again, and try as hard as possible to avoid it, which isn’t easy when it’s on every fucking network.
With all due respect WE, I think you’re being too literal.
Reminds me of an episode of “Rescue Me”. One of the firefighters joins a group for people suffering from PTSD due to 9/11 but ends up storming out because none of the others were actually at the WTC. One was even in Europe!
Not watching any of it, but I wonder if anyone might remember to ask what happened to Osama and al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
No, silly me, of course that won’t happen.
So you’re saying terrorism is fine as long as it allows people to make a profit?
Eh, could be, Jeff, it has been a long week.
I believe that a great deal of people will watch one or two of these memorial shows. That is why there are so many because each network wants a piece of the action. It’s still big news and it has only been three years.
I forgot. Honestly, I probably would have gone through this week without even thinking about it if it weren’t for the news.
So I guess now I’m a bad person, or something.
Don’t worry, they’ll cheer up when they hear about the new line of collectable 9-11 victim action figures!
Seriously though, could you imagine the impact if we could get half as much attention paid to the victims of AIDS or TB? I’m pissed about terror too people (in fact, I was pissed before 9-11, back when it wasn’t the in thing), but it’s one problem among many, and not even the biggest one. And I’m looking forward to the day when we can forget about 9-11 the same way we forgot about the Maine, because it ceases to be relevant.
I don’t need to watch all that again. I saw enough on the news the morning it happened. As someone who was born and raised in NYC, watched the Trade Center being built, worked right nearby, and had relatives who used to work there, I guarantee WE will never forget. I’m not old enough to remember Pearl Harbor or the Maine, I wasn’t born yet, but I do know what happened and what they meant to their generation. I don’t need the networks replaying scenes of all those poor people falling over and over and over. Once was bad enough. But, I am still real interested in Osama Bin Laden and his buddies. I wonder why we don’t hear much about him anymore. I don’t need any memorial specials, videos, or “moments of silence” to remind me.
