911th Post, and a Call to Action

Fellow Dopers, we face a problem in the United States. Volunteerism is dying, and few are taking note of its passing.

Those readers familiar with me know that I’m a volunteer Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Technician, and former Paramedic. I’m also closing in on 50, and this is a business best staffed by young men and women.

Unless you live in an urban area, with career personnel managing all emergency services, there is a place for you.

Suburban municipalities are typically staffed by volunteers, or a combination of career (paid) and volunteer personnel. If you’re interested in becoming front line response personnel, training will be provided. If the heat of the incident isn’t for you, there are still places in which you can serve.

If you’re an accountant, you can manage the department’s books. A retired mechanic can assist with small tool maintenance.
The list continues, e.g. everyone who is dedicated to the common cause will find a place.

In closing, let me ask every Doper to look within their community and see if they can help to make it a better place through volunteering.

I believe that the rendering of useful service is the common duty of mankind, and that only in the purifying fire of sacrifice is the dross of selfishness consumed and the greatness of the human soul set free. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
