If, as mentioned in post #70, Urbanredneck had been previously taken to task about that particular joke then I can see the reason behind the “stop it” post for his comment alone. If, OTOH one off, light hearted comments like Cal and I posted are now considered “hijacking” then you might as well shut down the board.
A 16+ year poster who has never been irritated enough to complain before.
There has been a long standing concern with many of the women on this board when posting threads of a nonsexual nature related to their bodies (such as this one- wanting advice on fitting a bra) having to put up with a gauntlet of ogling jokes. That thread is perfect example of what was frustrating many women.
A request to knock it off was appropriate and consistent with past moderation.
I am the poster Dr. Jackson replied to in the post that was moderated. I am new to the board, and not familiar with the social norms. So I have no opinion as to whether the moderation was appropriate or not. But I wanted to tell him I was amused, not insulted, by his post, and this thread seems like the appropriate place to do so.
The fact that another poster had been a prior offender doesn’t magically make your joke more on-topic than his. All three were detracting from a subject that can sometimes be difficult for people to have a serious discussion about around here.
That being said, it was a note — not a warning — to everyone reading the thread not to go down that path any further. I don’t think that was the least bit heavy-handed.
I agree. I’m not a woman, I’m sure I don’t even see most of the juvenile ‘jokes’ women have to put up with in these threads, and I’ve still seen enough to make it painfully tired and obnoxious. Even if some women don’t mind some of the comments, the overall effect comes off as abusive.
The comments were more like a woman responding to a man’s thread on the best way to wear a catcher’s cup by telling him to save money and use a walnut shell.
I’ve spent the last 20 minutes trying to create an analogous off topic and belittling joke about DoctorJ’s “piece”…but it’s just not coming. I guess it’s too small a concern to work with.
I really hate it when women are talking about things like this and guys gotta come in and go hurr hurr hurr boobiez!!! Note that this doesn’t mean that men have no place in the discussion - but gods! We are aware that most men like boobs, we’ve known that and been subject to the hurr hurr hurr comments since we started developing them.
It would be really, really nice for once to be able to have a freaking conversation about our body parts without some of the menfolk stepping in and reminding us that, to them, our bodies are there only for their pleasure/use, and any discussion of them for any other purpose is, to them, irrelevant. Which is what it feels like when these “jokes” get put on these threads.
I highly suggest anyone who doesn’t see anything wrong with those sort of comments to read both of those threads, yes, even with as long as they are, because this thing was talked about before, for a long time, and was eventually decided upon. At the very least, however, look at the OP of the latter thread.
The three who received notes got them because of ignoring rule three (in the second topic): “Making sexual jokes in a thread about a serious sexual topic”.
Well, honestly, Women, talk to me about your bra habits please, is not what I’d call a “serious sexual topic.” Not that I disagree with the note, I don’t, but let’s not elevate a thread on bra fitting to “a serious sexual topic.”
ETA, didn’t mean to imply that the OP was not serious in the topic, just that I don’t find the topic sexual.
