I’m not talking about the SDMB. But another (band-related*) board I frequent has recently seen a trend toward posts like:
I miss the days when that board was the home of complete sentences and rational thoughts. I’ve had to essentially abandon it. Now I can begin to see where the SDMB oldtimers are coming from. (lol!! i totally get it omg!, et cetera)
I don’t want to name the band or board because I respect and admire the webmasters and don’t want to say anything against them.
A board I was on for a while got so bad that people’s fully-loaded HTML-with-full-page-image FREAKIN SIGS took up 99% of the space on the page… you’d literally have people posting nothing but “lol me2” and then three screen-scrolls full of their tardtastic sig. It was unreal. It’s sad when the idiots overrun places you like
That is one of the reasons why I just resubscribed to the SDMB. Every 2 months or so, one of my posts causes me to be smacked by a “clue” by four due to a grammatical error. I should spend my time in other sites that ignore such things! I would love it since English is my second language; but, where is the challenge in that?
The other 2 sites I like are also related to the SDMB so I’m always in the lion’s den, but I do appreciate getting mauled from time to time so I can get better.
Honestly my hat’s off to anyone who does something like this in a non-native language. I’m in awe of multilingual people, personally. Incidentally I never knew English wasn’t your first language.
Grammar and spelling are the biggest reasons I actually forked over money for this site. Normally I’m about as cheap as it gets, but for posts I can actually read… It’s wonderful.
In the good old days of Usenet, there was an entire group called alt.fan.warlord for making fun of people who had elaborate, bandwidth-wasting sig files. One of the funniest things I have read in the entire history of the internet was when someone was taken to task for posting a two-line message followed by a twenty-five-line ASCII graphic of Boba Fett. Sadly, the copy in the Usenet archives does not include the graphic, and it kinda loses something without that.
I currently am active on a message board just for pregnant women due in April (one of Pregnancy Weekly’s “Birth Clubs”), and Opal…what you described is EXACTLY how it is over there.
Signatures are obscenely HUGE and include about a half dozen pictures, gifs, you name it. Mine is small comparatively–just a countdown to my due date and two (reduced) ultrasound pics of my son. My signature is about half the size of most others. UGH. Worst was the one girl who ALWAYS had a video linked in her signature–anything from U2 to miscellaneous country songs to some gawdawful cheesy crap. It would make a thread take for-EVER to load, and then you had to listen to that musical crap every time you opened the page.
And the posts…dear LORD. Let’s just say the intellectual, or at least literary, skills of these very nice girls is a bit, erm, lacking.
Does anyone remember the '99 to '01 days of the Incubus Band board? I remember having the most involved conversations there with fans. It was a dangerous hobby! It’s dead there now, the last post was six months ago.
Ruffian - wait until you move on to any parenting (“mommy”) boards - they are just as bad, if not worse.
I have yet to find one I like, but hidden in all the CRAP there is sometimes some good information, so I patiently wade through many moronic posts and gigantic sigs, just in case I find something that is useful.
I lost my message board virginity to the Straight Dope and it has spoiled me for any others.
I just wanted to remark that the post about the giant BOBA FETT was funny enough to make me laugh 'till I cried. Dunno if it’s one of the funniest things I’ve read on the internet, because I’ve read some pretty funny stuff, but it’s definately up there.
