A book based on the bible...

I haven’t read it…but might.

I wonder if it would be OK for him to do a Quran-themed one?

Ya I didn’t think so…

I wonder why that is?

I am sure there are some people that are upset about this book…even if it is all very tongue-in-cheek. But I can say for sure that a quran-based one would never happen in this day and age because of what happened with those comics, or even the Pope getting called on the carpet and practically forced to apologize for something that he didn’t even say.

Why is there such a double standard? Shows on TV and even the big screen are always taking pot-shots at Christianity, Judaism and any other religion that isn’t muslim, but whoa hold on there fella…don’t even think of satirizing muslim faith…doesn’t matter if it’s as benign as a few poorly drawn comics, or a book like the one I linked above. It must be because it is so easy to whip up certain muslim masses into a blood rage…which is always said to be a very small number.

Yes, it would be ok. Why wouldn’t it be?

I see more shots at Islam than any other religion. If any religion is a political third rail, it’s Judaism, for obvious reasons.

Most of the new and entertainment media also bends over backwards to pander to Christians. How many Christmas specials and movies come out every year as opposed to anything centered around Jewish or Muslim holidays?

There is no double standard. You are imagining things.

Also, the book you linked to doesn’t even appear to be anti-religious.

ManiacMan, what exactly is it you want? People to make more fun of Islam? Make less fun of Christianity? Both? Or what?

I’m not sure why you think Muslims would have a problem with someone trying to obey the Koran and then writing a book about it. Indeed, isn’t that basically their mission statement (encouraging people to obey the koran that is, not write books about it).

It wouldn’t make as interesting a book anyway, as the Koran is one book, written by one guy, relatively recently, in a language that’s still widely spoken today. The Bible is really several different books, all written by different authors (possibly several authors per book) thousands of years ago, often in languages that are extinct. All of which leads to far greater risk of mistranslation, misintrepretation, and contradiction.

Okay. There are a bunch of Muslims who are fanatical assholes, and would put a jihad on your ass if you made a parody of the Koran. Was there some other point you were trying to make? And what’s with the whole, “Ooh, I’ve backed them all into a corner; I will now confront them with the truth they dare not speak” attitude?

I haven’t seen any Islamic parody on national level TV shows.

Shows like Family Guy and Southpark come immediately to mind as shows that do that.

Sheesh I can recall that one episode of Family Guy has Peter flashing back to when he met Mohammed who was depicted as a door to door salesman…but they block out the image of Mohammed because of no pics of Mohammed are allowed thing. But yet those shows routinely make some really outrageous stuff…

So when I saw that book mentioned earlier I wondered what would happen in the Muslim community if a book like above was made. Even if it was really “funny” to masses of Muslim people both in the east and in the west. I don’t think muslim leaders would allow it and would stir up their people like that did with those comics.

I know freedom of speech is important and all that but maybe no satire of people’s religion should ever be allowed? Because it seems like the only thing it does is offend people. Some people are even stirred up into a frenzy and commit awful crimes in the name of their faith because they are ‘offended’.

You don’t have a right to not being offended. Everyone and everything is going to offend someone out there. What are you going to do?

Unless this is a retorical question, this is just sad.

Dude, that was South Park. They were doing a parody of Family Guy. The blocked out Mohammed was a joke.

South Park also had Muhammed as one of the “Super Best Friends”, a superhero team made up of founders of various religions. The other Super Best Friends are Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Joseph Smith, Lao-Tze, and Sea-Man (who has power over fish).
