As you probably know, Canada’s government has decided not to join the United States in its war against Iraq. A minority of Canadians oppose this decision, which is all well and good; we are living in a democracy, we usually have freedom of speech and assembly, and different viewpoints make things interesting.
But there is one argument being put forward as a reason Canada should join the war that I find absolutely disgusting.
Lots of people that I’ve spoken to want Canada to go to war so we don’t face any economic ramifications. They’re worried about people losing jobs, goods becoming more expensive, and line-ups at the border, and say we should march against Iraq so they can keep getting cheap orange juice.
What. The. Fuck?! People are being killed and injured by U.S. weaponry right now in the middle east, and you’re worried about being shut out of a fucking contract tendered by a U.S. firm because we don’t support our neighbour? You fucking callous bastards!
There are many good reasons to oust Saddam Hussein (even if Bush hasn’t been using them). There are many good reasons to stay out of this conflict.
But to say that Canada should close ranks *just because *we’ll miss out on a chance to make some cash down the line is the most disgusting, vile, callow thing I have ever heard in my entire fucking life.
Believe Saddam is a threat. Say you think he’s linked to terrorists acting in North America. Argue that he’s a bad bad man who kills citizens of his own country.
But to say we should support the US because we’re gonna miss out on future economic opportunities is disgusting. People are fucking dying, and you want to make some cash.
You are vile, putrid, subhuman, filth.
