A Canadian flames the whole Canadian Olympic Mess!

We’ll forgive you because you’re hot, diaper and all.

2010 – Canada now has the record for the most gold medals won at a Winter Olympics.

I think I pictured you with glasses…

Happy now? I used to think everybody from Canada was nice and pleasant. I had to start posting on the SDMB to find out that some Canadians can give New Yorkers a run for their money. Anyway, to all the happy, nice and pleasant Canadians out there, congratulations.

I’ve been a bit annoyed with the international coverage of these games. Apparently if Canadians don’t act precisely according to their self-effacing stereotype, and actually engage in a public display of patriotism, they cause a short circuit in the foreign media. What, do you think Canadians aren’t patriotic? Americans in particular can’t grasp that someone might actually like a non-US country, and seem to be under the impression that we exist only for the hope that we might one day be allowed to live there. Maybe as a result of these games, Canadians won’t just be seen as a caricature any more.

Australia actually has a sports institute- the Australian Institute of Sport- which was set up primarily to ensure Australia wins lots of Gold Medals at the Olympics, in the wake of the Montreal Olympics (IIRC) where Australia didn’t win any and was subsequently very embarrassed.

Interestingly, I don’t know anyone here who’s actually paying attention to the Winter Olympics…

I’m a right bitch.

I feel much more secure knowing that you are not just a right bitch, but you are our designated Canadian right bitch.

I think that maybe it was the grumpy rantings of that old Canadian that spurred on his country to perform feats of greatness and to take home the most golds. So perhaps maybe it is all of you Canadians who should be thanking Val for having the balls and patriotism to spur on the rest of his country into a well oiled Canadian Gold Winning Machine!

Anybody want to thank him?

Anybody?
Well… I tried, **Val **

The loser of olympic proportions and his ilk having motivated the athletes? Not a chance.

Where, exactly, is this happening? I’ve seen nothing of the kind.

I spent the last week in the USA watching Olympic coverage and saw nary a hint that Americans thought Canadians shouldn’t be patriotic. Not even the suggestion. Is there some other country people were saying this? It seems unlikely.

I believe most of that kind of press came from Britain and Russia. The Brits were surprisingly harsh but it may have only been the tabloids.

I’m THE right bitch? Cool!

The Brits think we shouldn’t be patriotic? Pshaw. Half of what we were celebrating was surviving another winter.

I was gonna post something like the one you made ToeJam, however I was gonna actually thank Valteron

THANKS VALTERON! You are the motivator of all of the Canadian Olympic Athletes you have the power of a god. Please motivate other groups of people to do your will and it shall be done. Forever and ever. Amen.

Can you complain about Canadian politicians being self-serving assholes next? Kthxbai.

Screw Canada, lets get some sort of World group to be motivated. Let’s see if Valteron’s powers extends to mother Earth.

We aren’t normally like this, but it was a hockey game dammit!

Think you’re wrong there.

Most of the headlines here were either baffled amusement (18 year old criticised for having a beer, in public, after gold medal victory…wtf? So what) or annoyance at IoC (particularly the timing of Jacques Rogge’s statement about possibly axing women’s ice hockey, a few hours before the final. That man really is a prick)

Shit, I think we’d be pleasantly surprised if a British team, having won gold, limited their celebrations to a beer and a cigar! That’s pretty much a definition for decorum, compared to the way we tend to celebrate stuff (16 hours of binge drinking before passing out in the arms of a complete strangers).

'scuse me whilst I pat myself on the back…

Well, in this morning’s Toronto Star there’s this article titled “Brits, Russians grumble as Games end” which links to articles from The Guardian and The Times of London.

This is from The Times: “Canada has not come of age in Vancouver 2010. Canada has regressed into a sneering but ultimately impotent adolescence. It’s been — well, rather unattractive on the whole.”

Honestly, what did we ever do to you guys?
