A cogent and measured political essay

May I assume you to be a Nixon fan then?

I just have to stop in and applaud Enderw23’s post.

FDR was born rich and privileged, too, lived in fancy houses, had lots of connections, went to prep school and Harvard and all that.

I don’t so much mind seeing people who were born in the mudfields, pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, made themselves rich, saying “Hey, government or lack thereof should be helping out rich guys like me! Piss on you guys who didn’t have the gumption to do as well as I did!”

And I love the FDRs and Gores of the world…making sure that folks on other socioeconomic levels get a decent break, and doing their best to spread the wealth around a little.

It’s guys like Bush…of the rich and FOR the rich…who bug the living shit out of me. “I got mine, so fuck all the rest of ya!” The fact that he managed to do piss-all independently of his family connections doesn’t help his case with me either.

I have been closely watching the outrageous idiocy this election year has brought forth and I came here to scream invective about the whole, fucking thing, and maybe get my blood pressure under control.

You did it better than I could, and I appreciate it. I feel MUCH better, now.

Naw. He was a liar and an idiot.

To think. I considered voting. My God.

**Uncle Beer wrote:

Jesus. I still don’t get this complaint about Bush riding his daddy’s coattails. Who the fuck do you think Al Gore’s father was? I gotta hint for ya. He wasn’t some slackjawed tobacco farmer.**

The point is, Uncle Beer, that before Dubya was became governor of Texas, who ever heard of him? Now that he is governor, who cares? His record in office is unremarkable. He’s only been in politics for some 5 years. Before that, his record is, again, unremarkable. Nothing great or really note-worthy. Hell, he can’t even do the one thing a politician NEEDS to do; give a decent speech! The only reason anyone pays attention to him is that his father was President.

Sure, Gore’s family has been in politics for a couple generations. His father was well known and Al, ON HIS OWN has a history of being a Congressional Representative, US Senator AND 8 years as Vice President.

Whatever else you may think of Gore, at least he has some experience under his belt.

Damn, that was satisfying to read!

Well done!

blows a kiss to xeno, then adds xeno’s name to her potential crush list

A foreign policy scene from George W’s Presidency:
“Actually, George, this situation is very important.”
“Jeez, Dick, alright, already. And would it hurt to address me as Mr. President or at least ‘sir’ in front of the staff?”
“FINE, SIR, but you need to get over there immediately to meet with the Chairman and put out this fire.”
“Well, think about this. What if we moved some carriers into the area and bombed a few key targets? ‘George W.’ means accountability, and it would give a boost to the military. Besides, if I forfeit another racquetball game to Jeb, he wins the pool.”
“SIR. We are talking about CHINA here. A very BIG country with a BIG military and a BIG role in world politics. I advise you to meet immediately.”
“Alright, alright. It’s gonna be tough to find common ground. I don’t know anything about Jews. But, I guess we need the oil…make sure my Ernest movies get to Air Force One.”

When queried about Hollywood “product”, Bush’s main gripe was about excessive violence in today’s movies and television. Gore, seperately complained about gratuitous sexuallity on screen. Thus Gore doesn’t want bush and Bush doesn’t want gore…(borborygmus baddaboom)

Before Clinton became President, the same things could be said of him.

Personally, I wonder how long Gore would be in office, if he should win, before he is impeached.

<Personally, I don’t see the death penatly doing any good, so why bother? >

Personally, I think the recidivist rate justifies it completely.

Nachos4Sara, I don’t think that “pions” means what you think it means.

What a wonderful rant! I’m going to copy and paste the thread address, and e-mail it to my brother and a few other friends who have decided to vote whomever is the lesser (or least) evil to them. If you run next election, you have my vote!

You know, the worst thing about this election is that the Republicans (and I generally vote Democrat) put the wrong, and I mean way wrong, man on the ballot. George vs. John? C’mon, anyone with HALF a brain can see that not only was McCain more qualified, I believe he would would have won this election by a record margin against Gore. Would there even have been a question about it?

Alas, the special-interest pandering made it not so, and now I can only hope that Gore makes it in as the lesser of two evils. Dick Cheney is a scary guy, too.

Great rant!

Yeah, killing ex-cons would definitely keep them from going back to prison. Someone give this person a public office! Perhaps there you can appoint someone who will illustrate the basic sociological fact that no penalty can be sufficiently deterrent unless it is immediate, universal, and public. The death penalty is far from any of these, hence the “why bother” assessment.

Shirley Ujest, that’s a very poor parallel. Clinton had no father as President and he gave incredible speeches. I think his speeches alone are what won him his first Presidency. Besides, Clinton had a real vision for making things better. I’m not sure what Bush wants because he never really talks about anything except some nebulous “accountability” that he never explains how to implement.

It’s the issues, not the people. And this election, the only issue that really matters is the Supreme Court. Foreign policy is close behind, but the Supreme Court will affect all of us in a huge way. Why does no one realize this?

I absolutely love xeno’s rant. However, we are dealing with a very real situation. Personally, I’m not a Gore fan, but the people that I know who know him personally and/or professionally have nothing but good things to say about him. And even if we put all personal things aside, do you really want a republican President appointing a conservative, pro-choice, anti-environment, pro-search and seisure Supreme Court?

I just went for the Puerto Rico option and chose ‘None of the Above’

No, it certainly does not! I always thought “pions” were lesser people, like slaves almost…maybe I misconstrued its meaning somewhere. Blame it on my public school education.

Well, for starters N4S, it is spelled “peons”

Ah! There we go. Mystery solved. That’s exactly what I meant.

Jumble, you caught me on that one. I should have thought about it a little while before posting. Naturally, the second I hit that cruel button, I realized that there was that silly tidbit about Fathers who were Presidents.

Oops.

The rest of the parallel still stands, I mean, who ever heard of Clinton before he decided to Run for the big office. I mean besides all the women he slept with.

BTW, xeno Give yourself a pat on the back for one spectacular rant. You should save it for your grandchildren to read one day. If I had read it before I left for the polls, I would have voted for you…no wait…I’m running for president. Hell, you are far more coherent that I ever was or will be.
