A cogent and measured political essay

(Quote)
You know, the worst thing about this election is that the Republicans (and I generally vote Democrat) put the wrong, and I mean way wrong, man on the ballot. George vs. John? C’mon, anyone with HALF a brain can see that not only was McCain more qualified, I believe he would would have won this election by a record margin against Gore. Would there even have been a question about it?

Alas, the special-interest pandering made it not so, and now I can only hope that Gore makes it in as the lesser of two evils. Dick Cheney is a scary guy, too.
(End quote)
AMEN! TESTIFY!!! I’m a Dem too but kicked around the idea of writing in McCain, but then I didn’t think it would do any good. He’s got his head screwed on MUCH straighter than either Gush or Bore.

Interesting story for ya’ll - I’m training a new DJ at my college radio station and she, Tracy, used to work for the county Republicans. She was even at the gathering where Bush was nominated to the ticket.

I asked Tracy why they went with Bush and not McCain. She said that Reagan and Bush (Sr.) are “holy figures” in the GOP and some figured what better way to bring back the Glory of the 80s than to have one of thier offspring become president?

My next question - if the GOP wanted the spawn of Bush to run, why not go with Jeb? He’s been governor of Florida longer than GWB has been of Texas (does anyone out there know exact years?), the governor of Florida actually has something to do compared to Texas (even Bush’s supporters in my Poli Sci class have said there’s only so much he is allowed to do according to Texan laws), Jeb’s wife could’ve pulled in the Hispanic vote AND Jeb seems to have his head screwed on straighter than his brother does. Why not go with him?

Tracy’s reply? “His name isn’t exactly the same [as his father’s].” She added that recent polls indicated many folks thought Bush SR was running AGAIN!

This was the criteria for picking the man who may very well run the free world. Excuse me while I go bang my head against a brick wall.

Well. As usual, I see alot of pointless rambling and spittle flying, but very little in the way of a solution. I always find it amazing how people can bitch and moan, but when pressured fail to come up with an adequate solution to the supposed problem.

More, isn’t it interesting how you can sweep away Al Gore, who tries to be everything to everyone, and Ralph Nader, who has one pretty stable agenda and sticks to that principal area in his campain, and also everyone in between. Also intereting, you accuse Gore of pandering to Special Interests, yet you jump on several yourself, I assume claiming them as the True Issues.

Many of the responses I’ve read in this thread were praising your ability to pontificate. I’m interested in knowing how you yourself “misrepresent the disadvantaged the least egregiously” and how you fight for civil rights. What initiatives have you come up with, what are you part of? Instead of bitching about what you’re against, why not tell me what you’re for? Instead of looking for a solution, all I see here is a bunch of pointless whining and sniveling, complaining about how unfair the world is because the candidates didn’t ask you personally what was important. Judging from the vagaries of your complaints, I assume that you wouldn’t have had an answer, even if they had.

I must agree Beelzebubba on your general points, but this is the BBQ Pit, not Great Debates. The lauding here is for xeno’s lucid purgation of many a voter’s same frustration with this whole messed-up election. I don’t agree with many of the assessments, but I do feel like I’ve blown off steam after simply reading the post.

I felt it was appropriate as the BBQ Pit is “for all complaints and other discussion…”, and my point was more to complain about complaining than engage in debat.

However, I see your point. Perhaps I should have started a new thread.

Ahh…and I see yours.

Hi there, Beelzebubba! Sure is a scary username you’ve got.

Check here, here, here and here for some of my political views. Here and here are a couple of debates I’ve joined on current political issues. However, since I’m not currently running for office, nor am I either presenting or defending a specific political proposition in this thread, I feel no obligation to demonstrate my political activism to you. If you want to find out further what I’m “for”, then you can trot your inquiring mind over to the “Search” button at the bottom of this post and check my other threads for them. My purpose here is to rant; others who’ve responded to this thread have recognized that purpose. If you have a specific objection to the vitriol I directed toward your particular candidate of choice, feel free to comment (as others have also done), and I’ll respond — if I think your comments are worth responding to, which is doubtful.

So, in short, go piss up a rope.

All right, fine.

Here’s why I voted for Bush:

Gore/Clinton once referred to their plans to raise taxes as “investments”.

Last year my wife (who I don’t force to submit, thank-you-very-much) and I made a combined total income of just over fifty grand. We paid out between 40 and 50% in Federal, state and local taxes.

So what kind of return did we get on our “investments”?

We had to move into a much smaller apartment. Instead of buying a car, we paid over $1000 in repairs to her 9 year old clunker. She cashed in her 401K in an attempt to afford down payment on a twent-year-old house. We (once again) put off trying to have a baby. And what breaks my heart most is my sweet wife has to stay in a job she hates, where her co-workers treat her like CRAP, just because we can’t afford
to go with my company’s health insurance.

Investment…

INVESTMENT?!

I WANT MY GOD-DAMNED MONEY BACK!

That fucking surplus is there because Clinton/Gore’s government took too much of my fucking salary!

I don’t want to pay for your laziness.
I don’t want to pay for your abortion.
I don’t want to pay for you to take a photograph of a crucifix in a jar of urine.
I don’t want to pay you to not grow crops.
I don’t want to pay $1000 for a lug nut on a B-52.
I don’t want to pay room-and-board for a killer for the rest of his life.
I don’t want to pay for your retirement.
I don’t want to pay for your child-care.
I don’t want to pay for your medicine.

I want to pay for my medicine, my child-care, my retirement…
I want my wife to be able to stay home and raise our babies in our house.

Give me back my money, damn you!

All right, fine.

It seems the “new math” our esteemed liberal establishment has foisted upon our public schools has really taken hold of Algore.
Oh, and by the way, this is a REPUBLIC, dammit! It is not a Democracy (or mob-rule)! Read the US Constitution, Article IV, section 4. Or, if you are like Algore and his thuggish band of miscreant lawyers, perhaps “whole language” has taken hold as well and reading is not an option. In that case, go watch tv and shut the hell up!

Beelzebubba

The devils big brother ?

OMG I’m not gonna wedgie that guy any more.

Tygr,

Considering you influenced another thread (Why did you vote the way you did?http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=50298) I was pleased to finally come across the original post (you can read my response in that other thread....no need to be redundant!)

The only thing is that I wouldn’t count on GW to lower your taxes either…certainly the Republicans have never made any serious tax breaks. Despite being compared to a case of the shits, the libertarians are the only ones making any real progress in the cutting of taxes while the Republicans resort to half-assed, kiss-up techniques.

Want to keep the money that’s rightfully yours?? Vote Libertarian
