A Corny Question

For clarity, the vast bulk of bread sales in a UK supermarket will be baked using the Chorleywood bread process and delivered to the store daily. Most cakes and other bakery products are also manufactured off site.

The larger stores often have a small bakery at the rear of the store (as far as possible from the entrance). Presumably it is seen as an attraction and a way of enticing customers further into the premises. As I said before, the bakery generally produces a variety of artisan breads (sliced on request) rolls and baguettes.

They may also produce, croissants, pain au chocolat, doughnuts, seasonal items like hot cross buns and some pastry items like Pastéis de Nata and jam tarts.

At my sister-in-law’s Giant, they have corn muffins, so they are sold alongside blueberry muffins, etc. Not sure if they have corn bread.

I can buy something called corn bread (Maisbrot in German) here in Switzerland, but it’s a yeast bread with ⅓ of the wheat flour replaced with corn. Not the same at all, as corn bread is normally leavened with baking powder and/or baking soda.

Huh! Here, a little square of cornbread costs $4, maybe more - it’s wrapped tight in cellophane and sold alongside the serve yourself donuts and cookies. Another store, the same, only sold right near the rotisserie chicken and hot half a turkey breast to go. One can buy a little box of Jiffy corn bread for $1 and whip up a batch in less than half an hour but they count on the harried shopper just grabbing the convenient already made.

Yep. I can buy it at all the local grocery stores, but won’t. Damn Yankees! Somebody above said it tastes like a filling-less Twinkie and that’s about right.

I don’t know where you live, but in Cleveland Giant Eagle sells whole unsliced loaves, plus there’s bread stores

Our local chain grocery store’s bakery sells unsliced bread. I’m guessing it’s the bread that doesn’t quite make the cut  to be a sliced loaf. I LOVE the unsliced white bread. It’s soft and doughy and makes THE BEST toast. I could eat an entire loaf at once.

My Giant sometimes sells those cellophane wrapped cornbread squares. I can’t imagine trying to make a sandwich with them, though.

I dunno. That seemed kinda minimal to me…

Yea, I’d take it back if I could
