Why do e-mails telling me when someone’s replied to a thread I’ve posted in only come if I started the thread now? I liked being reminded via e-mail of a thread I’d forgotten I’d posted in.

Howcome I keep getting listed as Unregistered on the list of last poster to reply to a thread?
- I think they have changed the default to not send emails. I’m for anything that will keep the board chugging along. You can check “Email Notification” box when posting a reply if you want emails or click “Subscribe to this thread”.
It doesn’t happen automatically. You have to do at least one of the following:
[li]subscribe to the thread in the user control panel (user cp button)[/li][li]or set “Use ‘Email Notification’ by default?” to yes in “User cp -> Edit Options”[/li][li]or check the “Email Notification” box when you post.
[/li]BTW I don’t recommend using the e-mail notification feature
[li]because it’s unreliable due to the server being overworked[/li][li]and it causes more work for the server compounding problem A.
[/li]
That can happen sometimes if you use the quick reply box and get logged off. Don’t use the quick reply box to prevent that from happening, and/or set these two options to yes in “User cp -> Edit Options”:
Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies)
Browse board with cookies?
Arnold, if you don’t recommmend using E-mail notification, what do you suggest for people like me who don’t have time to read every thread, but who like to keep tabs on their previous posts? What I currently do is run a search on my name over the past one day, but I believe that this method is subject to both of the problems you listed as well.
Bookmark the threads you posted to in your browser. That’s how I do it, anyway.
Good idea. I guess that would probably work for most people, but I routinely access the board through several different computers.
Then I suggest you simply e-mail the URL to yourself. You can presumably read your e-mail from each of your several machines, right?
Okay I’ll try that. I don’t think it’s as simple for me as the other methods, but anything I can do to help out the boards.
While Arnold Winkelried doesn’t recommend using the email notification feature, I don’t think he has any problem with using the thread subscription feature in your User CP. It is more reliable and allows you to check all the threads you are interested in very efficiently.
Actually White Lightning the email notification feature and the subscribe to thread feature do pretty much the same thing, with the main difference (the only difference AFAIK) being that with subscribe thread you don’t have to make a post in the thread.
BTW I’m not saying people should never use it, but use it judiciously, and don’t depend on the e-mails being sent to you because e-mails have proven to be not 100% reliable in the past.
