A Dance with Dragons speculation thread (unboxed spoilers)

Because we simply don’t have enough Song of Fire and Ice threads going on now…

The 5th book is really, really, they promised for real coming out in a few more days (July 12th), so why don’t we predict what’s going to happen in it from the second post of this thread on? This thread will not be friendly for people who haven’t read all earlier books, so I’ll give you time now to back out without being spoiled.

Don’t fill this thread with spoiler boxes!![ul]
[li]If you want to talk about something that happened in books 1-4, don’t use spoiler boxes[/li][li]If you want to make a wild guess as to what will happen in DwD, don’t use spoiler boxes[/li][li]If you want to make a reasoned prediction as to what will happen in DwD, don’t use spoiler boxes[/li][li]But if you’ve found an actual legitimate spoiler, do use spoiler boxes[/li][/ul]

Few things on this board are more annoying that spoiler boxes in every post, so none of that here. Now that that’s out of the way…on to predictions.

My predictions at the moment:

[ul]
[li]Given the title, I fear that there’s going to be a lot more Dany in it than I’d hoped upon learning that Martin wasn’t using the same characters in FfC. That’s kind of a bummer, but I think that maybe she’ll end up nearer everyone else in this book. Maybe.[/li]
[li]Winter still won’t come yet. By this point I don’t think winter is ever really coming at all before the final book.[/li]
[li]Arya will continue to recite her stupid prayer at least a dozen more times, because the 27 times (yes, I counted) she’s already said it simply isn’t enough. Some readers still might not grasp how much she hates the people on her list, so it needs to be hammered home some more.[/li]
[li]Another Stark must die. I think it’ll be Rickon, for real this time.[/li]
[li]By the end of the book Jon will have gathered some clues about his true parentage.[/li]
[li]Cersei will end up realizing that her sickness is another brat of dubious paternity.[/li]
[li]The mysterious figure who is interested in the Stark boys will be revealed as long lost Uncle Ben.[/li][/ul]
…that’s all I can think of for now. Your turn.

You want the same characters as AFFC? No Tyrion! No Jon! No Dany (Strong Belwas)!

[ul]
[li]Arya will regain he sight and quit faceless man training.[/li][li]The Others will attack the Wall and Melisandre will be outed as evil.[/li][li]Davos will be revealed to be alive.[/li][li]Dany will cross the Narrow Sea at the end of the book.[/li][li]Cat will die for good.[/li][li]The Martells and Tyrells will fight skirmishes.[/li][li]Brienne will learn where Sansa is.[/li][li]Theon will attempt redemption.[/li][/ul]

Doubt it.

Probably.

Definitely.

Most likely.

Probably.

Probably.

Probably.

Not sure what you mean by redemption. He could die trying to escape the Dreadfort. He’s definitely going to die in Dance.

I only have two predictions.

  1. The Onion Knight isn’t dead
  2. Tyrion is going to meet up with Dany.

What’s the spoiler policy for the sample chapters that GRRM put up on his website?

Anyway I agree that Tyrion will meet Dany. I am guessing he will join forces with her and become some kind of dragon trainer and figure out how to use them in war. I agree that the climax of the book will be Dany crossing the Narrow Sea.

Will DwD have any Arya chapters? I thought there wouldn’t be any common pov’s with FfC. Actually I hope GRRM ignores that and resolves the cliffhangers in FfC. It’s quite possible that DwD will be the last book that he finishes so I hope he provides at least a bit of closure.

  1. We are going to learn a lot more about Jon’s parentage

  2. Syrio will show up in Bravos and hook up as Arya’s teacher again.

3.Tommen will die

  1. Brienne and Jaime will hook up

  2. Little finger will get into a war with the Black crows and the rest of Tyrions posse.

  3. Varys will turn out not to be a enuch after all

Sample chapters would be real spoilers.

It’s also a spoiler, but you can find the answer to your question in the list of narrators on the wiki page for DwD.

Snarky_Kong, I don’t care one way or the other about the other narrators from FfC. I just hate Dany and wish there was as little of her as possible in the remaining books.

A spoiler about the onset of winter.

The 6th book is called The Winds of Winter, so I’m guessing it hits then. 7th is called A Dream of Spring.

Everyone keeps talking about Arya but she was in the last book. My understanding is that this is book 4.5, a companion piece to Feast of Crows. Is that not the case anymore?

Mostly, but the last part extends beyond that timeframe.

Reading the Wiki article, I have spoiler questions…

How can Reek be Theon when Reek was mentioned in CoK at the same time as Theon was at Pyke?

After the season finale of the show, I started thinking about how they were going to do things for season 2. I know book 2 has new faces & Jaime isn’t really in it, so I was wondering how far they would change things. When checking out Clash of Kings, I was surprised to see Dany only had 4 chapters…and only 6 in Storm of Swords (out of 80!)

My prediction for Dance is that it’s more Dany than we’ve had since book 1.

Other than that…

I think we’ll get the story of Davos, and why people in Feast think he’s dead (I don’t think he’s dead…but lost beyond the wall.)

Speaking of the wall, Dolorious Ed will make me laugh out loud. And I think Jon will kill Melisandre.

I agree that Tyrion will find Dany, but not before Quentyn Martell. Perhaps the Imp will get someone to champion for him and duel Martell…he’s due for a win.

Speaking of Dany, I don’t think we’ve heard the last of Jorah Mormont, but I do think he’ll somehow die for her.

I think Arya will remain blind, till book six at least, if not for good. She’ll be ‘seeing’ through Nymeria…that’s right, I’m calling a Nymeria/Arya reunion. If not in Dance, in the next book.

If we get another look at Myrcella, she’ll be turning into a bad ass.

If we get another look at Cersei, she’ll be pathetic.

If we get another look at Jamie, he’ll be heroic.

But that stuff is all probably for book 6, due out in Fall 2012!

But remember that the two books take place simultaneously, so it is possible he will die during DoD. I doubt it, though, because Cersei is an idiot.

I’m trying to avoid any spoilers, so I don’t even know which points of view we’re getting in A Dance with Dragons.

[ul]
[li]Brienne lives.[/li][li]Davos lives.[/li][li]Theon dies.[/li][li]Arya has passed her Faceless Man training because she didn’t actually kill the guy from the Wall. She lied about it.[/li][/ul]

I only read the books a year ago, so why did I forget that Arya’s blind? That idea doesn’t feel familiar at all :frowning:

Winter already came. There was snow on the Riverlands in the last Jamie chapter.

It was the last sentence of her last chapter. One could miss it.

The original Reek was Ramsey Snow/Bolton’s sidekick-in-atrocity. When he realized he was going to be captured, Ramsey killed him and assumed his identity, hoping to be able to wriggle out of things, or at least get a reduced punishment, by claiming to be just following orders. That was the Reek we saw onscreen during CoK. I assume Ramsey’s now calling Theon Reek because that’s the kind of thing he would think is funny, and also as some payback for minor/imagined slights Theon gave him while he was playing the role

Thank you. Is this from preview chapters of DwD or was it in one of the other books? It’s been forever since I first read them and I’m only about halfway through Clash of Kings on the re-read.
