A Day Of Horrible Phone Calls: One Suicide, One Eviction, One Serious Illness

I normally make my phone calls to family and friends on Sundays (free cell phone minutes) and today was not a great day.

I called a friend in LA who told me a mutual acquaintance had walked down to the beach, drank a six pack of beer, took a handful of pills and killed himself - he had lost his job, had two dollars in his pocket, 12 dollars in his checking account and had been evicted from his apartment.

Called a friend in NYC and he is being evicted, has no real option other than to move in with his (truly) insane brothers in the family home upstate NY. He has been going through a rough patch for several years now, so it all comes as no surprise, but dismal nonetheless.

Called Germany (not a free call) and another friend lost his job and then found out he has a serious case of Guertelrose (Herpes Zoster) and needs immediate treatment.

Puts my own complaints in perspective, but was a pretty bad day for phone calls today.

Nothin’ much to say – except I hope your calls next Sunday find your family and friends in better spirits.

Here’s a lesson I learned the hard way: just because things could have been much worse, doesn’t mean they’re not bad. DMark, I’m sorry about your day. I can just imagine wondering if you should call anyone else in case something awful’s happened to them!

Here’s to happier news and better days.

Phonephobia*: If you don’t have it, you probably do after yesterday.
Sorry about all the bad news. Hey, it came in threes. You’re good for a long while. No guarantee implied. Answer phone at your own risk.

*Not sure if this is a real phobia, but I think you get the drift.

Sorry to hear all the bad news.

I am so sorry! There are days when I hate my phone, and calls at 2 a.m. are bound to have me fearing the worst, but I don’t usually expect to be hit with such horrible news when I call someone.

I hope your friends get their situations straightened out. You have my deepest sympathies on the acquaintance who died.

Please don’t call me.
Good luck to you and your friends.

It makes you a Telephobe.

On the plus side, two out of your three calls were free!

(Hope that made you smile).
