My grandmother was born on December 17, 1904. Teddy Roosevelt was President of the United States, and women, althought they could vote in some states, did not yet have that right in all places.
In this latest election my grandmother voted in her 20th presidential election! How about that? It was by advance ballot, and my aunt was allowed to assist her. In true secret ballot form she isn’t saying who she voted for, and my aunt of course keeps quiet about it too, as is proper.
My grandmother died at 113, lived and traveled alone for the last part of her life, and voted in every election. She voted for Calvin Coolidge perhaps more often than was fashionable (i.e., long after he was dead), but she learned to like living Democrats, and voted for Muskie and McGovern and Carter before she died.
Hooray for grandmothers! They don’t know everything, but they all know a few things we don’t.
Baker, why don’t you write to the White House and tell them? I’ll bet your grammie would get a letter in the mail from Bush, congratulating her on her 20th vote. May even get some media attention, if she’d like that…
My grandparents both voted in Ohio this year. They are 96 and 94 respectively and have been married for 76 years. I know my grandfather at least voted Deomocratic for the first time since Carter left office. Every year he would prefer to dig up FDR and prop him up in the Oval Office, so he is never completely happy.
