A disjointed review of a WW2 naval warfare game: Navy Field.

Navy Field.

It’s sort of odd. It’s a WW2 naval game. The gameplay is from an overhead perspecitive, (think Diablo-ish). The sound and graphics are nothing to write home about, but they are useable. Also, the overall game is sort of rough, as the game is originally a Korean one, and they are upgrading as the port over to the American market. One of the results of this is quite a bit of ‘Chingrish’, as they try to translate from Chinese (though its a Korean game) to English, but no show-stoppers.

You start with a ‘nuetral’ ship. As your sailors progress in experience, you can upgrade your weapons and your ship. Eventually, you can join a nation (American, British, Japanese, or German). The size of ships goes from frigates to battleships and carriers. (You start getting aircraft from cruisers onward; seaplane scouts mostly, but the carriers are neat, if rare.)

Battles can range from 2 to about 100+ ships, all player controlled. There are a handful of AI games for new players to cut their teeth on, but the game revolves around player-controlled battles.

The crux of it all is sort of EQesque: Leveling. You get access to better guns, torpedo mounts, aircraft, and ships as you level. You gain XP and money depending on how well you do in battle. As with most leveling systems, the early levels fly by, then the steep climb up begins right around the time you get into the advanced destroyers and light cruisers.

As I said, the game is rough, but it has potential. Also, it’s in open (free) beta, so give it a shot. I’d be interested in hearing if anyone else plays it, and what they think. For all it’s problems, I am sort of addicted to it (trying to get my Japanese Kagero-class DD to something a bit better!)

Not many WW2 naval games out there, and certainly not ones that cover the ‘tactical’ aspect of it all. This isn’t bad, especially as it’s a beta, and hopefully will be improving.

I’ll give it a look.

If you haven’t seen the P.T.O. (Pacific Theater of Operations) series by Koei. Check them out. They are great games. Especially the first one. It was for the Super Ninetendo.

I loved that game. I never thought a decent strategy game could be made for a console, but that was a damned good one!

Made me go bid for it on ebay. It’s been years since I played it.
